UK Garage, often just referred to as Garage, is a genre that seamlessly blends R&B's soulfulness, the energy of house, and the rhythmic complexities of jungle and drum & bass. Originating in the early '90s in the UK, it's characterized by a distinctive syncopated 4/4 percussive rhythm, shuffled drum patterns, and heavily edited vocals. The environment this music thrived in can be visualized vividly: dimly lit underground clubs in London, filled with eager ravers swaying to the melodic basslines and pitch-shifted vocals, each echo telling tales of urban life. As time progressed, the genre split into various sub-genres, with 2-step being one of the most notable, emphasizing the shuffled beats and often featuring more prominent vocal lines. Artists like MJ Cole and Craig David brought the genre mainstream recognition, but the heart of Garage always beat strongest in the underground clubs where it was born.
