One in four Germans wants microchip under skin: poll

HANOVER, Germany -- It sounds like something from a sci-fi film, but one in four Germans would be happy to have a microchip implanted in their body if they derived concrete benefits from it, a poll Monday showed.

The survey, by German IT industry lobby group BITKOM, was intended to show how the division between real life and the virtual world is increasingly coming down, one of the main themes of the CeBIT trade fair that kicks off Tuesday.

In all, 23 percent of around 1,000 respondents in the survey said they would be prepared to have a chip inserted under their skin "for certain benefits."

Around one in six (16 percent) said they would wear an implant to allow emergency services to rescue them more quickly in the event of a fire or accident.

And five percent of people said they would be prepared to have an implant to make their shopping go more smoothly.

But 72 percent said they would not "under any circumstances" allow electronics in their body.

The results appeared to surprise even the high-tech sector.

"This is of course an extreme example of how far people can imagine networks going," said BITKOM chief August-Wilhelm Scheer.

Parents Angry Over CCTV In School Toilets

Youngsters at Grace Academy in Chelmsley Wood claim they returned from half-term to find staff had installed the cameras without notifying them or their parents.

Some parents are furious at what they say is a "total invasion of privacy" and claim some pupils are so anxious about being watched they are refusing to use the facilities.

One mother whose teenage daughter attends the school is concerned the footage could fall into the wrong hands.

She told the Sunday Mercury: "She came home from school and told me security cameras had been installed in the girl’s toilets but we didn’t know anything about it.

"You would expect the school to have consulted parents first yet we received no information and no letters have been sent home explaining this decision."

Grace Academy claims the cameras only cover the sink areas and have not yet been activated.

School principal Terry Wales told Sky News: "It’s to safeguard our youngsters, many schools are using cameras now.

"We had a parents’ forum last night, we explained the arrangements and the parents were satisfied.

"We’ve found that when it comes to health and safety, children want to feel secure."

But privacy campaigners warned about the psychological effects of the feeling of being watched, even if cameras are not switched on.

Dylan Sharpe from Big Brother Watch told Sky News: "Children are entitled to privacy like anyone else.

"We’re raising a generation of children accustomed to being constantly watched and monitored, whether cameras are switched on or not."

Grace Academy already has 26 CCTV cameras watching other parts of the school.



The incident is the latest row to erupt between schools and parents who are concerned about safeguarding their children’s privacy.

Last year police were called to a school in Salford after parents were horrified to discover children had been filmed changing into their PE kit.

Although the footage was not misused, police seized the film after negotiating with the school.

In 2007 it was revealed schools had fingerprinted thousands of primary school children without their parent’s consent.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families later ruled that if schools want to obtain and store biometric data from children, consent is not required from parents.

Rupert Murdoch’s Twentieth Century Fox corporation has admitted to planting political brainwashing within its globally popular TV shows and indeed boasts that it is proud of the fact.

A corporate video currently being showcased on another part of Murdoch’s media empire, MySpace.com, shows Fox executives and stars of its universally recognized shows bragging about how they use the platform of hit shows that are broadcast globally to implant messages about the supposed threat of global warming.

This is not the first time Fox have been enthusiastic in propagandizing for the establishment. In 2003, Rupert Murdoch himself admitted that the corporation had “tried” to help the Bush administration sell the war in Iraq.

The text accompanying the video states, “In 2006, News Corp. embarked upon a company wide initiative to reduce the size of its carbon footprint.”

The means by which this “initiative” was carried out is then made clear by a plethora of clips from Fox’s most popular shows – the Simpsons, King of the Hill, Family Guy, Prison Break – which are all loaded with messages about global warming and the need to do something about it.

“What could we do on a practical level to start making a difference,” asks one executive before another answers, “The biggest thing we’ve done is inserting messages about the environment into some of our content.”

In other words, Fox has embarked on a deliberate campaign, which could only have been done with the coordination of the script writers of each program, to force people to accept the pseudo-science of global warming by brainwashing them into accepting it as a reality. This has been achieved by weaving in messages about climate change and having popular characters in the TV shows embrace specific tenants of the global warming manifesto.

According to an Associated Content article, “Studies have shown that watching television induces low alpha waves in the human brain. Alpha waves are brainwaves between 8 to 12 HZ. and are commonly associated with relaxed meditative states as well as brain states associated with suggestibility.”

Experiments have shown that less than one minute after the viewer begins to watch television, the brain switches from Beta level consciousness, associated with active and logical thought, to Alpha level, which is associated with passive acceptance and suggestibility. This is why advertisers spend billions a year on commercials as well as product placement within TV shows themselves.

The scale of what Fox is admitting to here is staggering, and the fact that they even boast about what they are doing beggars belief. As Darryl Mason sardonically comments, “I never realised just how much I’d learned about the dire threats of global warming-induced climate change simply by watching immensely, globally popular Murdoch/Fox entertainments like The Simpsons and 24.”

Millions of people not just in America but globally are being educated, or should I say re-educated, about the highly complex and highly debatable topic of global warming, not through a reasoned public debate between advocates and skeptics, but through fictional cartoons, comedies and drama shows produced by a monolithic corporation that has its tentacles deeply embedded into the same establishment that is trying to sell global warming in order to introduce a CO2 tax and regulate people’s lives.

A LOS Angeles fertility clinic is offering to design a baby to the parents' exact requirements.

The Fertility Institutes' clinic service gives the chance to select physical traits through "cosmetic medicine". Prospective parents can request a son with brown eyes, black hair and a dark complexion, or a pale, blonde, green-eyed daughter.

Other fertility specialists are outraged that the clinic is seeking to capitalise on advances in embryo cell analysis aimed at identifying dangerous diseases and defects in the unborn.

They claimed that the "bespoke baby" in-vitro fertilisation service is distracting public attention from the way medical technology can produce children free of debilitating genetic conditions.

But the clinic's director, Jeff Steinberg, who was in the team involved in the birth in Britain in 1978 of Louise Brown, the world's first test tube baby, is undeterred. "I live in LA and everyone here wants to have a straight nose and high cheekbones and are perfectly happy to pay for cosmetic surgery," he said.

"I understand the trepidation and concerns, but we cannot escape the fact that science is moving forward. If I have to get smacked around by people who think it is inappropriate, then I'm willing to live with that."

Dr Steinberg's clinic, already the world's largest provider of gender choice, has had "five or six" requests from couples for the new service, which involves embryo selection not genetic modification.

He expects the first "trait selection" baby to be born next year. The cost for the process will be about $US18,000 ($A28,000).

It is based on pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, or PGD, which has for several years allowed doctors to identify potentially lethal diseases or conditions in embryos.

Yet scientists have recently made dramatic advances in their ability to analyse a cell. At a meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics last year, William Kearns, a medical geneticist, said that he had been able to get enough DNA from a cell to identify thousands of characteristics of the embryo. Dr Kearns explained the technique for medical use, but Dr Steinberg quickly spotted other potential.

He said parents might seek the clinic's services for medical or cosmetic reasons. Some couples might already have a child with a skin cancer and want their next baby to have a darker complexion.

His proposal to offer trait selection has outraged Dr Kearns. "Steinberg has jumped on my research but I'm totally against this," he said. "My goal is to screen embryos to help couples have healthy babies free of genetic diseases. Traits are not diseases."

Mark Hughes, one of the pioneers of PGD, said: "It's ridiculous and irresponsible. There are thousands of desperate couples who have no hope of having healthy children without this technology, and here we are talking about this."

Marcy Darnovsky, director of the Centre for Genetics and Society, said: "The concern is that we'll be creating a society with new sorts of discrimination. Now it's eye and hair colour. What happens if it's height and intelligence? Some parents may have qualms, but still feel under pressure."

Schools put 'Big Brother' CCTV cameras in classrooms to monitor teachers' performance



Schools are installing CCTV cameras and microphones in classrooms to spy on teachers.

The surveillance technology is being used to check that pupils are being taught well and to expose poor teachers.

But the approach has provoked fury among teaching unions, who say the tactics smack of Big Brother.

Under the system, special training classrooms have been equipped with 360-degree cameras and five microphones.

Some cameras are so powerful they can pick up what pupils are writing in their exercise books or what's on their computer screens.

Teachers can be given live feedback from senior staff through a concealed earpiece.

The best lessons will be put on to a DVD and used as a training tool for other staff.

Although taking part in the monitoring sessions is voluntary, school heads say they expect the majority of their staff to participate.

But union officials fear reluctant teachers will be compelled to take part.

They claim the filmed lessons could be used to get around existing agreements on how often senior teachers can sit in during lessons.

Under national guidelines, teachers are only allowed to be monitored for three hours a year.

Dr Mary Bousted, head of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, said she had 'major reservations' about the use of the technology to monitor staff.

'It does seem a bit Big Brotherish,' she said. 'Although schools say that the process is voluntary, it would be quite difficult to stand up and say no if other people are agreeing to it.'

Chris Keates, general secretary of the NASUWT teachers' union, said: 'We do not support the use of cameras in this way and see no professional security or educational benefits to such systems.'

Dozens of schools around the country are employing the scheme, including Harrop Fold School in Worsley, Manchester.

Headmaster Antony Edkins insisted he would not be spying on teachers and that monitoring was 'constructive' rather than 'judgmental'.

Mr Edkins said: 'This is not Big Brother in any sense. We are using the technology as a coaching tool. It allows teachers to get the benefit of an extra pair of eyes.

'Having someone in the class can put off teachers. But allowing a coach to remotely watch everything that is going on and give feedback has been really useful. I have used it, both as a coach and as a teacher, and found the feedback was useful.

'A number of staff have volunteered to take part in the coaching and the majority will use it on an ongoing basis but we are certainly not forcing it. There is no point in people doing it who don't feel happy with it.'

Mr Edkins's school is considering expanding the scheme to monitor the teaching of more practical subjects such as music and PE.

The revelation that teachers are observed using CCTV follows a row over the use of cameras to identify and punish children who disrupt lessons.

One primary school came under fire for using surveillance equipment to identify an eight-year-old girl who hid her friend's shoes during a lesson.
