Biography
Frantic Freak, or Niek Regelink, came into contact with House music at an early age. It soon became apparent that his preference was not the mainstream, but especially the darker, rougher and harder sound. Through music by, for example, The Prodigy he discovered the powerful sounds of Gabber, in which he found his great love. Again, he seemed to be less attracted to the 'commercial' side, more to the raw and dark style that was played at Hellraiser parties. Unfortunately there weren't many parties like that so he couldn't go often, but if one came along it was a great joy every time.
He also started finding pleasure in collecting records, and pretty soon more and more money was invested in it. As a result he built a record collection that is, to say the least, admirable. Niek did of course play his records but back then just at home, there was no ambition to start spinning at parties at the time. However, when the Hardcore scene took a 'new' direction in the late 90s, this soon came to change. He saw the style in which he had lost himself disappearing, slowly but surely. He could not accept that and decided to seriously start working on his mixing. Maybe he could help ensure that the sound would not be lost…
And he did! In the early years of his career mainly through his participation in a concept that is a big name in nowadays scene, Pandemonium. This event was almost the only remaining platform for lovers of the darker and rawer side of what has since been labeled as 'Early Hardcore'. And although the group of fanatics was relatively small, the fire continued to burn. When a few years ago a revival originated on this side of the gabber Niek, because of his experience and never giving up this style, had an edge over the rest. Soon his name came forward as the man you had to have when it came to the harder side of Early Hardcore.
That title he retained ever since, mainly because he has kept looking for ways to improve and renew himself continuously. His energetic and raw sets are often filled with less known to unknown tracks and a set will never be boring or predictable. He has thus become not only a hero to the people on the dance floor, but also a source of inspiration for new artists. The Early scene today is perhaps even more interesting than ever because many tracks are pulled from the dust that you did not even hear in the old days. And Niek certainly had a share in that development.
Now, we are a few years and quite a few more highlights further. He has had performances at several major venues both inland an
d abroad and, for example, he was asked to play the closing set in the Early area on the last Thunderdome. Perhaps most striking are the four solo performances that Niek has given in the meantime. In sets of 7 up to a respectable 9 hours he has shown his versatility by treating the crowd to Early Hardcore in the broadest sense of the word: from melodic Rave to rock hard, ruthless Terror.
Frantic Freak has left his mark on today's Early Hardcore scene like no other, and best of all: he's not done by far!
