The dance event Majestiq 12 is canceled due to the police in Östergötland requries 708 400 SEK (Approx: 78 000Euros / 110 000 USD) for their surveilance. It's the first time an event in Östragötaland is affected by this payment requirement.
With international DJ booked and thousands of tickets sold. About a month before the event was dated to start, the organizers posted information that Majestiq12 was canceled.
- I accept the fact that the police wants to prioritize their resources. But that this event were going to need 77 officers to oversee a 10h dance event for 2,500 people doesn't feel reasonable. Says Anders Gummesson, PR manager for Stadium Arena.
Jan Mattsson from the department of justice defends the decision and thinks it's well motivated.
- We think that because of the nature of both the event and the music it is believable that there will be big drug-related problems during that evening, just like last year. I also think we have the general publics support when it comes to putting so much money into one night. Most of the would rather have us out there during the days.
The operation costs about half a million SEK (60k Euros / 80k USD) more than the event could sell for. Is that reasonable?
-- We take no position on it. Entirely different things is the basis for our decision.
IFK-matches (soccer) and the August Festival also comes with great costs, but in those situations you do not to make the same decision.
- No, there is no profit motive and the organizers is not directed to a closed group. When the municipality arranges it, it is open to all, so therefore it is part of our mission to maintain public order.
How big were the problems last year?
- About 40 people were arrested of the 2200 attending. But there were a big ammount of suspected cases, I'm certain we could've found more. It's a hard combination with all the lightning, a big dancefloor, alcohol and such.
Were the problems bigger than a usual night at a bar/nightclub?
- It can't be compared in that way. They have permanent permissions and we continuosly oversee those places.
If the organizers don't pay what the police requests to oversee the event they are not allowed to carry thorugh with it. This means that a certain type of events will be hard to accomplish. For those who do not pay the fine the police and still carries through with the event violates the law about public order, which means that the police have the authority to break it up.
Stadium Arena AB will appeal against this decision.
- Unfortunately, we weren't informed about this in time, so no legal process will be done before the 5th November (when the event was planned to take place). Says Anders Gummesson.
- But we hope to be able to do this again in the future.
Everyone who has bought a ticket will get their money back.
