KARENN aka Blawan & Pariah (live) (UK, She Works the Long Nights)
Blawan and Pariah’s Karenn project is one of the best lives we've heard over the last months. Heavily inspired by the bastard techno of acts like the British Murder Boys, Karenn’s live show is distorted, punk-rock 4×4 at its best.
The Karenn live show has received a lot of attention since its UK debut at Fabric, and finds the duo, who both have roots in punk (Pariah as a listener, Blawan as a drummer), creating a racket that, to our ears at least, nods to the next-room, sometimes wilfully tinny hardcore of groups like Cursed as much as it does the British techno that’s so often cited as their key influence.

Kr!z (BE, Token)
Coming from a strong hiphop background, Kr!z’ DJ style is technical with cutting, scratching, juggling. This is only one aspect of his energetic dj sets. The other aspect is a strong sympathy for the more gloomy, dark, rawer sound of techno. Influences from Jeff Mills, Surgeon & James Ruskin defined his musical style and still play a big part in his performances today.
After being one of the most prolific techno dj's in Belgium for the last decade and being a part of Belgium's nr 1 techno concept 'Kozzmozz', the last years his dj-schedule gets him all over the world from UK to Slovenia, from Spain to China.
In 2007, Kr!z felt there was too much good music around from his favourite artists that didn't get a proper release, so he started up his own label 'Token'. After releasing tracks by Inigo Kennedy, Phase, James Ruskin, Marcel Dettmann, Blawan Surgeon, Xhin, Oscar Mulero, Go Hiyama, Makaton, Arrestar amongst others, Kr!z rapidly established the label as a fixed value in the techno scene of today. Also the Token label night concept took off with great success after nights in Berlin (Berghain & Tresor), Brussels (Fuse), Shanghai, London, Rotterdam, Eindhoven and more.

XDB (DE, Metrolux, Wave Music)
If love is built on trust and respect, then education and diversity are the foundations of a sublime reputation. What does it take, then, for an artist’s career to stand apart in the very big pond of electronic music producers? Germany’s XDB has been DJing since the early 90s, and his creative growth enhances his decisions of what labels and musicians he chooses to collaborate with. After years of working in a record shop, he launched his Metrolux label in 2006 and works closely with producers Atheus and Arne Weinberg.
Much of his studio work is created in the dark, beginning late at night and continuing on to the next morning, and he’ll usually take many sessions to complete a track that satisfies his own high standards.Lately, Kosta Athanassiadis is garnering the overdue attention of popular writers and fellow musicians. In April 2009, he delivered mnml ssgs’ 25th podcast in two parts – the beloved bloggers had seen XDB perform at Tokyo’s Labyrinth festival about six months earlier, and eagerly anticipated the chance to share a live set he’d recorded in Hamburg with their readers. In the following month, Intrusion contributed a podcast to Resident Advisor, and incorporated XDB’s live version of “Descap,” which was released on Metrolux before its re-release on Francois K’s Wave Music label. The latter was his big break, and since its issue in 2007, Kosta has been developing a renowned name as both an admirable businessman and creative artist.XDB’s throbbing basslines predate the rapid, wide-spread popularity of “the Berghain sound,” which is why one of his latest releases was a step ahead of everyone else.
Out on the still-fresh Delikat Records, his Mihon EP is as bright as the daytime, bringing techno out from dark, concrete rooms and into the sunlight. The title track is speedy and kinetic, and, like the Descap EP, the release includes both produced and live recordings of “Unago,” which has the sound of a child’s imagination gone wild. He also has a release on Sistrum, which is owned and operated by Detroit’s own Patrice Scott. The label’s discography expands slowly because Scott is highly selective, but he and XDB share the vision of pushing a sound that is influenced by Detroit but not trapped by its legacy. “I still prefer 909 drum sounds and atmospheric strings,” says Athanassiadis, but the intrinsic, storytelling element of creating music is his highest priority.
The lifestyle of the ever-touring DJ is an ideal one for XDB, which fuels his encyclopedic passion for music. When he isn’t spending time with his family, coaching tennis or growing his vinyl collection – which -- five thousand records, at this point – he is often working towards a production deadline or traveling to perform. Kosta intends his DJ sets to be full of organic warmth and depth, and it’s here that he lives up to his reputation as a historian of electronic music. His live sets repeatedly curate a greatest hits playlist that pores over the blueprints of dub, house and techno from the last thirty to forty years. He sees his music heading in a direction that ranges from deep and soulful Detroit house to raw, analogue sounding dub techno, which is executed brilliantly on his last Metrolux EP, Cagomi. XDB is currently looking forward to the release of the Lost Tape EP on Wave in late November 2009.
Throughout his growing popularity, XDB has kept his identity nearly silent, allowing his music to be unpolluted by preconceived notions that comes with branding one’s image. “Less is more,” he suggests, applying the advice to inspiring and established artists. In the end, it was this tactic – of letting the music speak for itself – that cultivated the respect and trust of his fans. If that isn’t love, then what is?

Basic Soul Unit (CA, Philpot, Ostgut Ton)
Born in Hong Kong and raised in Canada, Stuart Li ‘s interest in club music started as a teenager in the late 80′s listening to Toronto’s independent college radio stations (House, Hip Hop, Electro, RnB, Freestyle and even Reggae and Soca could usually be heard on the same show). By the early 90’s he was hanging out in the multicultural city’s thriving after hours scene where DJs would be playing a cross section of house music from New York, Chicago, Detroit and Europe. Stuart grew up on labels such as Trax, DJ International, KMS, Nervous, Strictly Rhythm, & Nu Groove. Working at Cosmos Records store during the late 90′s led Stuart to dig further into Disco, Jazz, soul, funk, Latin, Brazilian. With this wide spectrum of interest in music, Stuart’s strength as a DJ is his versatility. Depending on the night and the crowd, he can throw down funky Techno, jacking sounds, soulful and deep House, disco, and sometimes a combination of these.
As with his Djing style, Stuart’s music can swing from lush and soulful melodic techno to jacking beats or smokey deep house (with hints of above aforementioned influences). He has released music on respected labels such as Dolly, Philpot, Mathematics, Mule Electronic, Versatile, Ostgut Ton, New Kanada, and Creme Organization. Basic Soul Unit has been getting played and charted across a spectrum of music enthusiasts from deep house heads and techno aficionados. Li also has a number of acclaimed remixes under his belt for Dolly, Creme Organization, Hivern Discs & Octopus.
Stuart has also been working under the alias Herman making music that explores rhythms outside of the four to the floor realm. The first two releases were on Fine Arts Recordings and received enthusiastic reviews.

Handless Dj (BE, Beyond)
I didn't see any points so far of making a page, trying to stay away from a typical industry in which I barely see any signs of personal achievement.
Things went further than I expected, thus this late edited page.
I'm part of High Needs Low, as a booker, organiser and resident. I Play records and that's how I like it. No personal judgement or what so ever, I'm kinda affraid of digital, should work on this, haha..
I NEVER got stricken at early age by music. My first memory was NOT being able to play Xfiles theme on a cheap plastic flute in music class.
I'm having lot of fun playing record even if this is a life quest. I'm just a resident to warm the things up or close it down in a sideral journey. I keep on progressing, and that's what I'm here for. No digitricks, no superstar DJ. Let's keep it fun and simple.
No boundaries, I love weirdo tracks. let's say I'm playing some 'retard house' and techno. From electro to italo, quite a taste for Chicago jackin' soundz and some more 'classic detroish' oriented shit. (basically...). I believe that you can play quite everything but in the right timing and the right feeling.
I like to surpriseby breaking genre boundaries. Playing on textures, lights and story telling, I like to put my listeners out of the comfort zone to catch them up on a groovy vibe.
Still lots of things to hear, to share, to discover, I like to keep a naïve approach on this, and that's what keeps me excited.
