Interview: Painbringer (The Netherlands)
Painbringer (Lammert Brouwer) is a trancecore/psycore producer and DJ from The Netherlands, who is mostly known for his work with the Fix Party and Cenobite labels. In my opinion, it is great to see an older style of hardcore being recreated for a new generation of hardcore fans. Cenobite Records have recently released Painbringer’s first album ” The Power Within”, and it has been been very well received by the international hardcore community. I won’t go into too much detail about Painbringer here, because I have reviewed his debut album which will be up on the site in a few days.
I want to send out a massive thanks to a really nice guy and someone I’m proud to call a friend; Painbringer. I’ll be coming to party with you guys soon!

THV: When did you hear your first hardcore track and what was it?
Painbringer: The first hardcore track I heard was Poing by Rotterdam Termination Source, probably because it was a chart hit. But the track that got me into hardcore as a young boy was B.O.T.T.R.O.P. by DJ Hooligan. I fell in love with the acid and breakbeats in that track.
THV: When did you decide you wanted to produce hardcore music?
Painbringer: It all started with cutting cassette tapes with different (hardcore) beats. Some years later I started using Fasttracker on my 386 PC. It was all crap, but fun. I think it was around 2002 when someone showed me Fruityloops and it was much more serious but my goal wasn’t to release my music on any label. I just wanted to make noise. I’ve recorded about 3 or 4 hardcore tracks in Fruityloops, after that came Reason (and Record) and I’m still using that for all my productions.
THV: Were Fix Party the first label to noctice your productions?
Painbringer: Fix Party wanted to release a psycore/cenobite-like compilation album, and they wanted some fresh blood so I sent the guy one track (one of the few tracks I made with Fruityloops) and he wanted more. After the compilation came out he asked me if I wanted to do a 12 vinyl release. I wrote a few new tracks because the tracks on the compilation were old. Somehow the label postponed my release for 4 years which was frustrating, but eventually it did come out with one new recorded track.
THV: How did your release with Cenobite Records come about?
Painbringer: Michel Klaassen(Leviathan/Tellurian) who runs Cenobite has been a very good friend for some years now and he wanted my tracks. I wanted to do an album release because I recorded a lot of tracks the last few months and since vinyl is slowly dying we decided to make it a limited CD release so people can still buy a physical product. I don’t think many labels would have accepted my sound anyway because nowdays it seems like every (mainstream)hardcore track has to be a hit song or be in a certain category, at least in Holland. I don’t like that mentality. Music comes from the heart, not my wallet or ego to get more bookings or get liked by a large crowd. If people like it, they like it. If not, then thats fine. I’m not going to be a sellout. It’s a shame that so many labels have limited themselfs by only releasing hardcore with 2 or 3 minute breakdowns and ‘hands in the air’ melodies, very hardstyle-esque only a tad rougher.
THV: Do you prefer DJ or live sets?
Painbringer: With DJ sets I can play other peoples tracks. I wish they never invented those CDJs lol, vinyl was so much more fun. With a CDJ almost everyone can become a DJ. Just burn some downloaded tracks on a cdr and you’re done. I use CDJs myself now because I want to play new tracks that won’t come out on vinyl, and most organisations got rid of their turntables. Maybe I’m old fashioned but I don’t like having MP3 files on my computer, I’d rather have a product in my vinyl or cd collection with a nice big sleeve. Live is fun because I can play around more with my own tracks, but a live act will always be limited in a way that I’m alone and its impossible to do every single sound live. I don’t do many live acts to keep it more exclusive. It’s hard to pick a favorite.
THV: How often do you play at events?
Painbringer: I don’t get booked that much (not mainstream eh), probably because I just go my own way and don’t kiss any asses hahaha. I’m not signed to a popular booking agency. I always enjoy playing at events.
THV: Who are some of your favourite artists?
Painbringer: I have to name Leviathan, who has always been an inspiration. He has made tracks that were way ahead of thier time. And he also produces lots of other styles. Manic is a new producer for Cenobite and he’s got a lot of talent. I used to have a lot of favorites in hardcore, but most of them produce stuff now I don’t really care for. Non-hardcore: Depeche Mode, The Prodigy and tons of others. At home I listen to lots of different genres. There’s so much good stuff out there.
THV: If you could work with an artist of your choice who would it be?
Painbringer: Liam Howlett from The Prodigy, he’s just a genius. And their tracks are so powerfull live. In a way I do think I work best alone, I did one track (Das Böse) with DJ Arjuna in my studio which was recorded in a few hours. I spent more hours mixing it then recording it. The vibe was all fun and we weren’t serious about the track. It was one big laugh
THV: You and your partner have recently just had a newborn son come into yours lives. Can you tell us what its like to be a dad?
Painbringer: It’s just amazing! The best thing that ever happened to me. He’s a lazy guy like his old man. Hahahaha. I won’t be able to spend much time in the studio, but for me its all worth it. I’m already recording new tracks on a laptop but I’ll have to flesh them out in my studio eventually.
