hihi.. you should come to Middelburg... we (RA students) are obliged to speak english because our school has an international character, but we speak so much dutch that the foreigners learn it from us
well, i'm glad to hear that english persons are willing to learn dutch. in leeuwarden there are many german students at the moment and how bizar it may sound, they only speak german or english! for crying out loud! learn the language of the nation you are at. for me it is no problem, because i can both speak german as english as dutch. but i can imagine that it is disturbing for other persons.
because i can both speak german as english as dutch.
But that´s the problem for germans that speak well english, there are not many people in the Netherlands which speek neither english or german, so you have to be realy good in dutch otherwise it´s always easier to change to hold a conversation in english or german.
For me also changing languages is a problem. So if i don´t now how to say something in dutch i change to english but switching back than is realy difficult.

I hate that. I think everyone should be obligated to learn Dutch if they intend to stay longer than a year. But hell, Amsterdam is more an American city than a Dutch one anyway.

Yes! I wanted to move to Holland! that's why I started to study dutch!
I remember one time in utrech... I was in a hotel and a guy was talking to me in Spanish (he was spanish) and he told me "to learn dutch?? why?? you don't need it here!!!!" and I became mad with him. If everybody thinks like him then dutch will desapear with the time. You have to respect the culture of the country where you are moving... at least the oficial language!!! if you move to Spain and you don't want to learn Spanish... then you will have problems to have a normal life here.
Hello everybody,
that's true; it's not easy to learn dutch if you don't follow lesson and you have to be help by your friends who talk to you in dutch... because if you don't have the "goed uitspraak" everybody is talking to you in english!!! annoying!!!
But that's the price to be "in" I think... My girlfriend is dutch, I am french and we are talking in english... good at the beginning but annoying now when we want to go further in the discussion!
I can understand better but to express myself oualala hardcore!
If you live in a country, you have to speak the natural language: that's a basic!
tot snel oups see you soon

That is a good point!
But, i dont think its really necessary. Eventually, wouldnt it be better if we al could speak one language? Or at least have one MAIN language? I guess english would be best suited for that since its already implementend in so many countries already.
Dutch people have always been a trading kind, and its in our nature to know more languages. Or at least a little bit of english.
Does or language really matter when were so small compared to the rest of the world? Maybey we should all learn chinese with its upcoming economy.
Just something to think about.
Ik spreek shlecht ... erm... dutch
i always wanted to learn dutch,
but i havent found the right software yet.
I fully agree with Akasha!
U have to respect the culuture of the country in which u are moving,
and u have to speak their language !
these are the unwritten rules of every country, not matter if germany, holland, austria, britain,....

No, that's disrespectful to your own country.

Grin...
why learn dutch? its difficult and all the dutch people arent as stupid as other people from other countries who cant speak english, german or whatever We all speak english and basic german, so why bother learn dutch.
And why do we always need to change our language to commucate with you?
We always do it, if we go to germay, we speak german, but is someone from germany comes to holland we also speak german...
Why?
Because we have an inferiority complex: foreigners are always more important than ourselves. We are more than willing to give up our culture, language and identity to please tourists and immigrants. They don't have to adapt, because we do it already. So please, foreigners, come live here and help us waste our once so beautiful country!!!!!!!
And why do we always need to change our language to commucate with you?

ya exactly ..thats the way it should go down .. and if you dont like it then you no where the nearest airport is ...
I also want to learn dutch...I have been living in The Netherlands for 8 months, but unfortunately I couldn't follow a dutch language school...I always spoke and studied at university (in Nijmegen) in english...
watching tv, dutch websites, looking what was written in shops and around the city...I have learned something, mostly the written dutch...I'm able to understand 60% of what I see written in dutch...and a little bit also the spoken language...but of course it's not so much!!
I love The Netherlands, and I really would like to move there again in the future, maybe to live there forever...so I want to learn the language, to be able to stay there!
The problem is that I cannot easily find a dutch school in Italy, it's not a common language to learn for us...
I do what I can using a dictionary, some books...but I know that I should start from the grammar basis, and mostly I need to listen the spoken language! to read a book is not enough

If you want to learn how to speak dutch, then you just have to mingle with dutch people!
I know that sounds easier said then done, but its the most easy way of learning. Because it kind of forces you to communicate with them. First, youll start in english of course, but eventually they could help you... And maybe if you could get a job as a translater im sure they'll be happy to help you learn dutch as well.
I dont know if you already tried some of these methods, but you can always give it a shot!
