Hello everybody,

that's true; it's not easy to learn dutch if you don't follow lesson and you have to be help by your friends who talk to you in dutch... because if you don't have the "goed uitspraak" everybody is talking to you in english!!! annoying!!!
But that's the price to be "in" I think... My girlfriend is dutch, I am french and we are talking in english... good at the beginning but annoying now when we want to go further in the discussion!
I can understand better but to express myself oualala hardcore!

If you live in a country, you have to speak the natural language: that's a basic!

tot snel oups see you soon
;)

I think you're right.. I've learn English because I only did Englisch games(world wide games, Pristontale, Tibia)
I have people from howl the world in my msn, and that helps too..
But I think in holland you don't learn a thing on school..
only things you don't need.. We learn german too.. but I don't understand that!!

Ich spreche keine duitch, tut mir leit.. xD

maar nederlands gaat me een stuk makkelijker af xD

Yes! I wanted to move to Holland! that's why I started to study dutch!
I remember one time in utrech... I was in a hotel and a guy was talking to me in Spanish (he was spanish) and he told me "to learn dutch?? why?? you don't need it here!!!!" and I became mad with him. If everybody thinks like him then dutch will desapear with the time. You have to respect the culture of the country where you are moving... at least the oficial language!!! if you move to Spain and you don't want to learn Spanish... then you will have problems to have a normal life here.

:respect: to you my friend, respect the other country its culture and language ;) (Y)

That is a good point! (Y)

But, i dont think its really necessary. Eventually, wouldnt it be better if we al could speak one language? Or at least have one MAIN language? I guess english would be best suited for that since its already implementend in so many countries already.
Dutch people have always been a trading kind, and its in our nature to know more languages. Or at least a little bit of english.

Does or language really matter when were so small compared to the rest of the world? Maybey we should all learn chinese with its upcoming economy. :)

Just something to think about. :D Yes i am dutch, and yes i am proud of it. And no i dont speak chinese... :D
Ik spreek shlecht ... erm... dutch ;)
i always wanted to learn dutch,
but i havent found the right software yet.
I fully agree with Akasha!
U have to respect the culuture of the country in which u are moving,
and u have to speak their language !
these are the unwritten rules of every country, not matter if germany, holland, austria, britain,....

And why do we always need to change our language to commucate with you?
We always do it, if we go to germay, we speak german, but is someone from germany comes to holland we also speak german...
Why?

Because we have an inferiority complex: foreigners are always more important than ourselves. We are more than willing to give up our culture, language and identity to please tourists and immigrants. They don't have to adapt, because we do it already. So please, foreigners, come live here and help us waste our once so beautiful country!!!!!!!

ya exactly ..thats the way it should go down .. and if you dont like it then you no where the nearest airport is ... :)
I also want to learn dutch...I have been living in The Netherlands for 8 months, but unfortunately I couldn't follow a dutch language school...I always spoke and studied at university (in Nijmegen) in english...
watching tv, dutch websites, looking what was written in shops and around the city...I have learned something, mostly the written dutch...I'm able to understand 60% of what I see written in dutch...and a little bit also the spoken language...but of course it's not so much!!
I love The Netherlands, and I really would like to move there again in the future, maybe to live there forever...so I want to learn the language, to be able to stay there!
The problem is that I cannot easily find a dutch school in Italy, it's not a common language to learn for us...
I do what I can using a dictionary, some books...but I know that I should start from the grammar basis, and mostly I need to listen the spoken language! to read a book is not enough :-(
well fair play to you :) .. at least you try not like so people who expect it to be easy for them :P

If you want to learn how to speak dutch, then you just have to mingle with dutch people! :D

I know that sounds easier said then done, but its the most easy way of learning. Because it kind of forces you to communicate with them. First, youll start in english of course, but eventually they could help you... And maybe if you could get a job as a translater im sure they'll be happy to help you learn dutch as well. :)

I dont know if you already tried some of these methods, but you can always give it a shot! :D Good luck with it! (Y)

Does it have you also for English? 8)

Im living for for month in Amsterdam now and dutch is still quite bad Realy hard becouse everybodys speaking english here you are never forced to speak dutch !

Dude ... your English sucks balls
ghahhahahah its quite funny alrite :P

I'm Dutch, but I deal with "international" people on a daily basis, so I thought...see if non-Dutch PF-ers experience the same as my colleagues :D.

Just a few pointers to learn Dutch (assuming that you live in our "wonderful" country:

1. Ask everyone within your environment to speak Dutch to you, even if you don't speak Dutch to them. As some of you already said, Dutchies can speak English all too well, so...;)

2. Watch more TV than you are used to. The Dutch television is very international oriented, meaning we have a lot of english/american shows, including Dutch subtitles. In this way, you can relate your native language to the Dutch words (this was my way of learning English as well O:);

3. When you want to speak yourself, start using English and Dutch mixed. Example: I want a ham & cheese sandwich --> I want a ham & cheese broodje. In this way, you will slowly get familiar with very specific Dutch words.

Well, hope this helps a little bit...good luck!

Cheers.
ja thats a very good way of learn dutch and speak or say it slow to your self before you want to say it .. but the televisie is very handy also :O

Indeed; although some words are alike, the grammar is way different in German than it is in Dutch...I am Dutch, but suck at German ;)

I disagree; because this is a language that is recognized as the world language, it will allow people to absorb this more easily than any other language...take a look at the tv and 8 out of 10 shows is in English...look at your own language and see how many English words already have been taken over...this is excluding eastern (chinese/japanese) languages of course ;).

In addition, if you learn English properly, it becomes a lot easier to learn languages like French and Spanish, because these are all Latin-based.

It's not so sure... :P Some poeple cant speak their mother languages... :P

About the topic: I've started to learn dutch a little bit (on my own at home, it's pretty pleasant :) ) and from my perspective it's really connected with German and English...
Some part of grammar are similar to German(not all of course but some structures- indeed) and some words similar to English...
But of course it's not the same. Dutch is very original language and even when it's fucking difficult for me to say some word- I like it ;) It's going to be a challenge :D
