Few composers have had such a large and sustained influence on later generations as Terry Riley. During this Legacy Night James Holden, Luke Abbott, Koreless and Young Marco will present their hommages to this luminary of minimal music. All of them are great admirers of Terry Riley and have been influenced by his work. James Holden, Luke Abbott, Koreless and Young Marco said the following about the pieces they specifically wrote for the World Minimal Music Festival:

James Holden:
"In retrospect, all my music has owed some debt to Terry Riley, even before I knew who he was. Of all the 'minimalists' his approach to stasis through repetition most resonated with me. But where he used tape loops and then rules-based composition to create incomprehensible detail within stasis, I use chaos theory and numerical musical systems towards the same end. In tribute to Terry I've built a pair of chaotic sequencers. Their parameters form a high-dimensional space, and the set of all musically interesting parameters form a (subjective) fractal inside this space. My piece Outdoor Museum Of Fractals will be a very slow tour of some landmarks in this fractal, with tabla player Camilo Tirado as co-pilot: a slow tilt of the head to inspect the arpeggio from a slightly different perspective, with thanks offered up to the man who gave musicians after him permission to move so slowly."

Koreless:
"Cycles I is based around independent regular pulses played by multiple string players. It is an exploration into continuous timing systems following simple mathematical principles. The results are precise, dense and complex rhythmic cycles that can be repeated indefinitely. Computer control of the players themselves allows these very fragile rhythmic patterns to be actualised, essentially making the players “part of the machine”

Luke Abbott:
"Terry's music exists in my mind as an endlessly unfolding pattern. Listening to his music gives me a reassuring sense of stasis, as if being held by the sound. But there is also a great sense of adventure in his music, it puts you in the moment and energises you. In my piece Five Hundred and Fifty Five Hz, I will be attempting to respond to these feelings and ideas through the use of synthesisers, a modulated matrix mixer and a gong."

Weinig componisten hebben zo’n grote en blijvende invloed gehad op de latere generatie musici als Terry Riley. Tijdens deze Legacy Night brengen elektronische musici James Holden, Luke Abbott, Koreless en Young Marco een hommage aan deze minimal music-grootheid. Zij zijn allen groot bewonderaars van Terry Riley en hun werk is zeer door hem beïnvloed.

James Holden, Luke Abbott, Koreless en Young Marco maken speciaal voor het World Minimal Music Festival nieuw werk. Zij zeggen het volgende hierover:

James Holden: “Terugkijkend is al mijn muziek beïnvloed door Terry Riley, zelfs voordat ik wist wie hij was. Van alle minimalisten vond ik zijn benadering van ‘stilstand door herhaling’ het meest interessant. Maar waar hij tape loops gebruikte, gebruik ik chaos theorie en numerieke muzieksystemen om dit doel te bereiken. Als eerbetoon aan Riley heb ik geïnspireerd op zijn muziek chaotische sequencers gebouwd. Mijn stuk Outdoor Museum of Fractals zal een hele langzame tour zijn langs ijkpunten die het arpeggio van Riley van een ander perspectief laten zien. Met dank aan de man die musici de goedkeuring gaf om langzaam te spelen.

Koreless: “Mijn stuk Cycles I is gebaseerd op onafhankelijk terugkerende pulsen gespeeld door verschillende snaarinstrumenten. Een onderzoek naar continuïteit gebaseerd op simpele wiskundige principes. Het resultaat: een precies compact en complex ritmische cyclus voor de duur van een eeuwigheid.”

Luke Abbott: “Terry’s muziek speelt zich in mijn hoofd af als een eindeloos patroon. Zijn muziek verzekert mij van ‘stilstand door herhaling’ Maar er is ook groot gevoel voor avontuur die je in het nu trekt en vitaliseert. In mijn stuk Five Hundreds and Fifty Five Hz zal ik proberen die gevoelens en ideeën te vertalen met behulp van verschillende noot-sequencers, synthesizers, effect-boxen, een matrix mixer en een gong.”
