• BLAWAN (HINGE FINGER, SHEWORKS - UK)
In a time when the bigger keeps getting bigger, the underground keeps delving deeper, and artists and trends fly faster than a DeLorean through time, it can feel hopelessly disorienting to keep your feet in the EDM loop. Even tracking niche scenes is equal to running a marathon, and finding standouts can be like picking out the extra-toed bird in a migrating flock. But once in a while a beat finds you, and there will simply be no shaking it.
This certainly seems to be the consensus, with respect to certain heads, regarding London’s rising star, Blawan. Grimly weaving dark and writhing techno, Blawan’s ambrosian beats captivate even the most ardent abhorrents of this style. Deep and pulsing, with jagged synths, and relentless rhythms, these tracks have situated themselves into the hearts of a large number of dance floor junkies as of late.
• SIGHA (OUR CIRCULA SOUND, BLUEPRINT - UK)
Over the last few years Sigha is a name that has become synonymous with forward thinking techno and electronic music. His interest in immersive sound design and experimentation combined with a staunchly British take on the genre have helped him carve a unique path through a densely populated field.
• HENNING BAER (GROUNDED THEORY, K209 - DE)
Berlin has no shortage of producers, DJs, and party promoters, but few match the quality, consistency, and enviable range of Henning Baer. As founder and resident of the esteemed Grounded Theory party and booking agency, Baer has been at the forefront of presenting innovative electronic music in Berlin while boasting vivid DJing and production skills that have made him an in-demand artist in his own right.
• RECONDITE Live (DYSTOPIAN, INNERVISIONS - DE)
A longtime collector of music, Recondite had his first experience with drum machines and hardware synths just a few years ago in a small studio next to the forest in Lower Bavaria. It wasn’t long after that he moved to Berlin to build up Plangent Records, where the artist rapidly established his name. With recent releases on Innervisions and Dystopian Recondite keeps on amazing people with his musical talent.
• DJ QU (STRENGHT MUSIC - US)
Ramon Quezada (a.k.a. DJ QU) lives and breathes house music, even if he's not exactly sure what it is anymore. "House and techno used to be the one thing," he says. "Now, Derrick May is techno and Kerri Chandler is house, but I never saw the difference." As far as he's concerned, if the music can be traced in some way to the deep house that first began to emerge from Chicago in the late '80s, then it's suitable for his record bag.
• RNDM (DIAL, LAID - AUT)
Hailing from Austria but based in Hamburg, RNDM aka Oliver Kargl has released some of the most stunning deep house records of recent years, including the unforgettable Hideaway Lane on Laid, and proved himself equally as adept at remixing, turning in cuts for Efdemin and Recondite, to name just a few.
