♦ Scuba (Hotflush Recordings, UK)
Scuba (Paul Rose) is the founder of the influential and consistently high quality Hotflush Recordings. From playing a part in the formative years of the sound on the pirate airwaves in London, to working dancefloors across the globe, to a swathe of excellent releases on Hotflush and the high profile Soul Jazz imprint, Scuba brings his own unique musicality to the UK sound.
Always fresh and innovative, Scuba’s recent output is at once melodic and musical and devastatingly heavy. The Hotflush label has been a creative incubator for some of the most original and forward-thinking producers in the UK scene including the likes of Distance, Joy Orbison, Mount Kimbie, Pangaea, Loefah, Toasty, Slaughter Mob, Vaccine, Gravious, Marlow, Boxcutter and Jazzsteppa. Hotflush - along with Paul Rose’s other imprints - Abucs, Scuba and HF2 can always be relied on to push the dub sound in new and exciting directions. With his latest full-length album “Triangulation”, topping charts all over the world, and already being hailed as a masterwork, Scuba’s record bag will be bursting with exclusive dubs of uncompromising caliber.
♦ Dense & Pika (Hotflush, UK)
Emerging mid-2011 with a series of handstamped white-label releases, Dense & Pika have since become a must-check facet of true, modern underground techno. Covetted by the likes of Blawan, DJ Koze, Jackmaster, Sven Vath and Scuba with the latter signing the duo up for a series of 12"s for his Hot Flush imprint, Dense & Pika's output has garned such support that a step into live performance has been a highly anticipated move.
With each EP they produce, Alex Jones and Glimpse give us something different amid the pummeling techno they're building a reputation for. On Dense & Pika's third release for Hotflush, the head-turner is the lead track, "Colt." The crushing kicks that open it may hint at a journey to the darkside, but they're very swiftly joined by a plaintive piano riff, which sounds like its been culled from some early Chicago house track, secreting emotion with every key. A barnstorming bassline, distorted snares, ghostly strings and space—lots of it—add up to as an emotionally-charged techno record that you'll hear all year.
