Ophidian’s new album focuses on pure hardcore

With the release of his new double album Between the Candle and the Star Ophidian returns to his roots. Previous albums featured sidesteps to other genres, but this time the conscious decision was made to stick to the pure, raw hardcore with which he made his name in the past decennium.

,,By focussing on that I could showcase my own sound,” says the 32-year-old producer, who worked on the album for two years. ,,It may be a less broad palette genre-wise, but not less diverse musically.”

Between the Candle and the Star is the third Ophidian-album to be released. Blackbox, his first album on Enzyme Records from 2003, is still one of the most sought-after releases in the scene. Tracks like Butterfly VIP, So Many Sacrifices (with Ruffneck) and Abandon are hailed as hardcore-classics and are still played every weekend at parties in The Netherlands and all over the world. This new double album has all the ingredients to deliver more hits: The two CDs are filled to the brim with no less than 25 phat tracks.

No half-assed work then, but over two-and-a-half hours of pure hardcore like hardcore was meant to be. Over half of the tracks were produced specifically for the album and have not yet been featured anywhere else. Where Ophidian worked solo on his previous albums, this time around he has teamed up with known acts like Ruffneck, Tapage and The Outside Agency, but also spent quality studio time with new collaborators like Tha Playah and Minckz. Also featured are remixes of his tracks by among others Rude Awakening and The Viper. He himself worked on remixes for DJ Promo, Angel and Miss Hysteria. On the album, disc 1 features mainly the brand new songs and collabs, and disc 2 is a collection of the remixes and tracks recently released on other labels.
