COSMIN TRG (RO, 50 Weapons)
There are those who imitate, and those who innovate: Romanian born, Berlin based producer Cosmin Nicolae is unquestionably the latter. At this point in time you’ll find him honing a ghostly, sketchy techno blueprint that fuses shuffling drums with eerie synths, snatched vocals-as-instruments and strains of Detroit and Chicago classicism. These analogue sounds arrive on labels like connoisseur Dutch imprint Rush Hour as well as Modeselektor’s 50 Weapons and Untold’s hotter-than-hot Hemlock, but are a stylistic mile away from the sound with which the man first emerged.
Back in 2007, when known simply as TRG, a breakthrough came courtesy of “Put You Down”/”Broken Hearts” – the track which launched Ramadanman, Panagea and Ben UFO’s now much lauded label Hessle Audio. The ensuing years have seen Cosmin’s sound in a state of constant flux, ever shifting through previously undefined sonic territory.
Although they say certain styles of music are native to certain cities, this producer is proving otherwise in the way his music draws distant parallels with 90s Warp, naughties London and du jour Berlin imprints like Fachwerk. “There is no template in mind” he says of his idiosyncratic sounds, “we all have our own little strategies, but for me it’s just about making it personal.” A simple but effective approach, it’s one that’s working wonders for Cosmin who is now found DJing everywhere from Fabric to Sonar to Berghain on any given weekend.
As well as a debut album is coming late August 2011 on 50 Weapons, the restless creative’s live setup is also evolving, endeavouring to create an ever more immersive and unpredictable soundtrack in the club. Though impossible to pin down, there’s a distinguished and distinguishable sonic personality about all to that which bares Cosmin’s name, and it’s that which makes him the essential electronic talent that he is.
LEVON VINCENT (US, Novel Sound)
Levon Vincent has created quite a buzz on the Electronic Music scene of late . With a heavy dj schedule , personal invitations to rock Berghain from none other than Marcel Detmann . A much talked about podcast for Resident Advisor ; a no 54 spot on the best 100 ranking dj’s by Resident Advisor , massive releases on his own Deconstruct and Novel Sound imprints as well as a heavy hitter by the name of “Late Night Jam” on Berlin’s much revered label associated to the infamous Berghain/Panoramabar ; Ostgut Ton .
Levon Vincent is a DJ and producer from NYC. He is part of the tri-state’s Underground Quality crew Headed by label owner Jus Ed. He runs the Novel Sound label and also makes records for Deconstruct Music, a second label which he manages alongside longtime friend Anthony Parasole (of House n Home/ The Club House).
”I spent my teenage years in the pre-Guiliani dance-friendly 90’s on 8th street at Patricia Field’s store, ticketing clothing in the basement during days, then spending my nights DJing and learning to make house music. In that era I DJ’d at clubs like Limelite, Shelter, Save the Robots, and Nation. The latter half of the 90s was pretty weak in NY, and I dropped out to focus on learning more about music. In 2002, I started working for Halcyon Records in Brooklyn where we hosted parties with DJs like Frankie Knuckles, Danny Krivit, Nicky Siano, Mark Kamins, Jus-Ed and many more inspirational figures. During this time I ran my first record label, “MoremusicNY” and I made my first deep house record, nomoreheros, (released in 2002). Jaymz Nylon heard it in the store and gave me some very important feedback, and helped me understand a newer approach to doing arrangements “on the fly”, which I then explored for the next several years. This technique proved to be a huge piece of the puzzle for me. In 2007 I began preparation for my label, Novel Sound, under the guidance of friend and mentor Jus Ed.”.
2010 is already a busy year for the dj/producer with a heavy dj tour schedule across Europe , Japan , Singaopre , USA and beyond . More goodies forthcoming on both Novel Sound and Deconstruct as well as Ostgut Ton .
STIMMING live (DE, Diynamic)
Martin Stimming was born in Giessen, Germany.Playing various instruments like violin, piano and drums when he was 10 years, discovering electronic music 5 years after. DJ Krush and Grooverider provided his introduction into this new electronic sound dimension. About a year later he came upon techno. At this time he was living in Butzbach, a small town near Frankfurt – influenced very much from Chris Liebing and Sven Vaeth, starting to djing and buying vinyl. He soon realized that for him making music was more fullfilling than ‘just’ playing a groove, or mixing a record, so he started to take his production seriously and moved to Hamburg to attend SAE (School of Audio Engineering). Music had become the most important thing in his life.
For 2 years, he was the producer part of the Gebrueder Ton, and in this time he befriended Diynamic (a record label from Solomun and Adriano). Stimming’s debut on Diynamic was Diynamic 006 Feuervogel EP, which he produces together with Solomun. The Diynamic 008 was his first solo artist vinyl.
