After the last Timeless we realised that 2 rooms wasn't enough for the UK's No 1 Hard House and Hard Trance Classics event! This time we are going bigger and better with London's newest multi-arena, purpose built venue! Andy Whitby kicks off 2006 in style with Timeless

OK so he was interviewed not so long ago on DSI with his lovely girlfriend Cally Gage...but now we've got him on his own for some intimate Q & A bizness! The ultimate Hard House classics night Timeless is just weeks away and Andy is getting hyped...

So Andy, have you been as busy as ever lately? What have been the major going-ons in your world?

Firstly, happy new year! Hope everyone had a great Christmas and NYE/NYD!

Mine were hectic as ever, 2 gigs on Boxing Day; B2T in Birmingham and Wildchild in London. B2T was an absolute blinder, can’t beat a good knees up at the legendary Sanctuary!

Over NYE/NYD I played at Tranzaction (Cornwall), N.E.C (Birmingham), Dance Academy (Plymouth), Tidy Weekender (Blackpool) and Goodgreef (Newcastle). All were absolutely blinding but Goodgreef was possibly one of the gigs of the year; the room was rammed and the decks were right in the middle of the dancefloor - chaos. Everywhere you looked there were people right in your face having the time of their lives so as soon as I started working the mixer it all went off big time.

Before that, in November, I went on tour in Australia to promote a new compilation I’ve mixed with Steve Hill; ‘Masif Hard Trance Bootlegs’. Whilst over there we had some incredible gigs, my favourite being a Frantic Boat-Party around Sydney, passing the Opera House. The sun was blazing, the kids were dancing…it was superb.

Straight from Oz I flew over to Holland to play at ‘I Love Hardhouse’ in Amsterdam before finally returning to England the day my new Frantic Euphoria was released. This made me the first hard-dance DJ to have compilations released in three successive months: October, November and December, something I’m very pleased about.

Whilst I was away Cally moved into the new house we’ve just got, so on return we set about making our new house…a home.

How have you been getting to grips with your Pioneer Effects Unit?

I’ve been playing on it quite a bit but you’ll get to see that @ HHA in February when I play at both legs of the HHA vs. HQ double header.

To use the Pioneer EFX in hard-dance isn’t as easy as people might think. It’s certainly a lot easier to use it in slower music genres like house or breaks, simply because you have more time than the standard 8 minutes of a hard-dance record pounding along at 150bpm.

As James Zabiela has shown, his crowds don’t mind it if he breaks up the flow of a set and makes a distorted noise fly around the speakers for a number of minutes. James sets are made up of constant stop-starts and although he is absolutely incredible live I still think, in some instances, a hard-dance crowd would react badly to something like that. When I loop a CDJ and gate it up til I fade it out, or loop a build so 2 tracks can kick back in at the same time I’m always a little conscious of how long the dancefloor has become static. There’s thousands of people screaming and waving their hands, but hold it for too long and you might lose the vibe a little, which is the opposite of my set’s objective: to build and build the energy til people are just going bonkers. That’s all part of the fun though, it’s a learning curve, and being 23 means I’ve got plenty of time to work on things like that.

I’m constantly going through new mixes and figuring out ways to get tracks to work together. If you listen to an Andy Whitby set when I have a decent set-up and monitors, you’ll see I don’t tend to mix like any other hard-dance DJ. I’ve spent a lot of time working on my mixing; to take the crowd up a notch and have a good night. In some instances the sets I play aren’t very structured, the reasons behind this are I believe the key to an Andy Whitby set has always been surprise; hearing something you’d never expect to hear at that point in time. This is so when you think you’ve heard or seen it all, something else happens and just smacks you firmly in the face, it keeps you on the dancefloor, waiting to see what’s going to happen next.

Do you think Hard Dance is healthy right now? Are you finding it easy to discover lots of good new material or not?

From where I’m sitting, things seem to be fine, I found out yesterday that my latest Euphoria mix has sold 43,000 in its first 28 days of release, so the kids are still loving hardhouse, no matter which message board geeks or the media say otherwise. Being part of a such a huge powerhouse like Frantic is a definite bonus as they are constantly thinking of new ways to ensure people have a great time, to keep clubbing fresh and exciting.

As for material, well…I’ve always been very picky about material as it is; the amount I get sent compared to the amount I play is a large ratio. I think there’s too many kids picking up a cracked copy of Fruity Loops, knocking together a track, getting their friends to big them up on the internet and then believing what they’re doing is right. With the introduction of download sites, now any one can knock together some tunes, set up a ‘digital label’ and flog it on a site. What I’ve heard from many people now is that this is causing problems, as people have to filter through all these awful records to find the decent ones.

If we really want our scene to continue to evolve and grow and become a worldwide sound we have to concentrate on quality records; original, fresh sounding tunes. With the remixes I’ve done, I’ve always tired to bring something different than the original, that’s the whole point of a remix. It’s meant to bring a separate group of people towards that record, so someone who didn’t like the original because it was, say, too hard, now loves it because it’s lost its hardness and is more euphoric or driving or bouncy. Personally, I think there’s nothing worse than a ‘re-rub’, where the artist has basically updated the original with new sounds, to me that’s a cop-out. It’s just a cheap way to get someone to part with their £5.99 in a record shop.

What direction would you like to see the music take this year?

I’d like other producers to follow Steve Hill, Phil Reynolds, Nick Sentience and myself (just to name a few) and start their own labels, offering punters and DJs good quality hard-dance that has been road tested and will do the job. People moan there’s no money in it anymore, but there is, Steve Hill is living proof of that. You just need to work hard, know what you need to do and make sure you’re putting out quality records.

Something Peter Prichard (head of Nukleuz) told me from the very minute I met him was ‘it’s all about the hook’ and he is totally right. I’m all about records that loop over and over in your head, the sort of tunes that when you wake up in the morning, they’re already there; you’re humming them in the shower.

Musically, I’d like to see producers really trying to push themselves instead of settling into writing 2-a-penny records and expecting it to be well received. Originality is the key, that’s why a track like Rundell & Maddox ‘Party People’ was such a hit, that’s unlike any other hardhouse record out there, and you could see when that tune was dropped, dancefloors reacted so positively.

How’s your production going? We haven’t heard that much from you in a while?

My long-awaited remix EP came out on Volkswagen at the end of November featuring the tracks ‘You’re Not Alone’ and ‘Loving U’ so it hasn’t been that long since I had a release.

The reason why I have held back on actually putting anything out of late though is my own label launches in February; AWSUM.

It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while, Steve Hill was the first person to suggest it early last year but at the time I wanted to wait a little longer as it just didn’t feel like the right time. Then, after a meeting in Australia, we chatted about it more and the whole game plan came together. AWSUM will be in vinyl and MP3 format and will be an outlet for all original Andy Whitby tracks, featuring remixes by Cally Gage, Mr.Bishi, K-Series, Steve Hill and other producers who I think can offer a good alternative to the original A-side.

I won’t be signing material though; everything that goes through my label with by Andy Whitby based, and would have been road-tested by me for months before til I feel it’s a 100% monster track.

January 28th sees you down in London for some classic Hard House at Timeless at Renaissance Rooms. How was the last edition of Timeless for you?

The last edition of Timeless was immense, as I was back to back with blonde bomb-shell Cally Gage and we had a lot of friends come down for it. The night was quite hard-based; Tin-Rib was on before us, so by the time the WhitbyGage Show got going people were ready and waiting for some euphoric-hard-dance-anthem-action!

Timeless for me is always going to be among the best gigs of the year, just because the crowd are so into it and the entire night it’s track after track after track of ‘ooooooh fucking TUNE!’ To anyone coming down on the 28th…I dare you not to have a good time, its going to be a blinder…see you on the dancefloor!

Are there any classics that you haven’t pulled out of the bag in a while that you feel deserve a rinsing at Timeless?

I’ve always tired to make my sets a combination of new and old but there’s always tracks that get forgotten, so I’ll lock myself in my deck room and dig out some corkers, don’t you worry!

Who would you really like to see play a classics set?

I’d like to see artist classic sets, like BK playing all his old Nukleuz stuff, Sentience doing the same, Superfast Oz playing his own Kaktai tracks, Ingo rocking Hotwax/Tidy & Vacuum stuff, Paul Glazby playing the VC back catalogue and so on….all artists playing sets made up of all their own material. Maybe even throw in a few special one-off edits made especially for that night just to spice things up a bit.

Which clubs are you dying to play at in 2006?

I’ve pretty much played every decent night in this country so I’d like to continue rocking dancefloors over here but take things overseas a lot more and continue spreading the UK Hard-dance sound.

The crowds in Holland for instance, are just incredible. When I first played over there I wondered how they’d take to my sound, but Danny D (promoter of some of the biggest parties over there) has reported that the kids are going wild for it, which is both brilliant and very exciting.

At the last HHA vs. Laboratory a lot of Dutch supporters came over for mine and Cally’s sets wearing ‘Whitby for President’ and ‘Get Gage’d!’ T-shirts, so it’s great to see we’re having an influence on what most people think is a more hard-style, hard-trance based club-scene over there.

I’ll be touring Australia again for the whole of November aswell next year. The minute I returned I spoke with Steve (Hill) and he wanted me back for a longer tour and I just jumped at it; Australia is just a beautiful place and Steve’s a top bloke.

What’s the maddest thing you’ve seen in a club recently?

The maddest thing I’ve seen in a club….hmmm, I always hate these questions, as I’m never in a club very long due to having multiply gigs in an evening.

However, whenever I play at Pam's House in Norwich things get very very crazy, they’re defiantly the new Sundissential as far as I’m concerned. They put a lot of time and effort into each event, the stage-shows are just ridiculous and the crowd really feed off that. At the last one I played just before Christmas, Santa was walking round giving out presents, people in costume were everywhere, stilt-walkers were wading through the crowd, snow-cannons were going off…it was a mad-house, and that’s half the reason its one of my favourite places to play.
