Heb er zin in!
What was supposed to be a normal gig in Ede turned out to be a disaster as both audio and visuals failed on me.
Famous XL wanted to celebrate their first year’s anniversary by booking Benjamin Bates for their main area and created a second area which was hosted by Mr. Funk. Due to vague communication, there was no information about this second area whatsoever. A few days before the gig it became clear that this area was more like a “chill out” area than a second dance area.
When entered, it turned out to a sorry excuse for a “chill out area” for which there was less or no budget at all for proper visual effects. You could almost spot more light effects in a car radio.. Also Mr. Funk, who had the “honour” of hosting the area, had to bring his own turntables ! (no expenses). The audio of both monitors and main speakers kept on falling out on the most peculiar (and unwanted) moments which made it almost impossible for the DJ’s to set up a proper mix.
Further the set-up position of the percussion act Brintaxx was poorly chosen (right next to the DJ booth) , since the monitor speakers where not audible anymore as soon as Brintaxx tried to mix in.
Also a separate monitor speaker for Brintaxx wasn’t supplied by the organisation which resulted in moments that Brintaxx was “way off” and left the DJ and crowd confused.
Mr. Funk tried to pimp up the area with some self made pieces by his good friend Alex, but it couldn’t prevent people to start leaving the area because of the problems mentioned above.
Finally I decided to quit a gig for the very first time in my ten years career to prevent creating a bad reference for myself due to the very, very bad conditions.
The main area on the other hand was well supplied with the essential visuals such as scanners and lasers. Michael van Leest, Giorgio Schultz and Benjamin Bates did what they came for and put out a superb set throughout the night.
Good meant advice for the organisation: Either create a seccond area with good visuals and reliable audio backed up by enough budget to create this or keep it to one area.
Also try to predict the number of visitors and decide wether you like to have two half empty area's or one full one (much better for the ambiance) and be more specific about the purpose of a seccond area.
Besides all setbacks I would like to thank the organisation for their effords to make this party happen.
