Gatecrasher’s Summer Sound System is set to be the pinnacle of the summer clubbing diary. The legendary club, famous for its high quality productions, will host an awe-inspiring event for 40, 000 clubbers at the Turweston Aerodrome in Northamptonshire on 22 June 2002. Summer Sound System 2002 will be a marathon 15-hour club fest featuring a staggering line-up of more than 100 of the world’s biggest DJs in 10 mind-blowing, multi-sensory arenas. Just one hour from London the festival is ideally situated for easy motorway access.
Summer Sound System will make festival history with several firsts including the first ever Bedrock and first ever Carl Cox Global Arena. Such a line up has never been amassed at one event before, but then Gatecrasher have a reputation for superseding all other large scale events. The Summer Sound System team are unrelenting in their quest to provide the finest quality international DJ talent matched only by the awe-inspiring production, lighting and visual effects. Simon Raine of Gatecrasher says, “Gatecrasher Summer Sound System 2002 is the future of out door dance events. Great attention has been paid to the arenas that have been individually designed to meet the needs of the DJs and artists performing inside them. The event brings together the very best in clubland to make sure our clubbers have the best party yet.”
The Gatecrasher Main DJ Arena will take the club’s dedicated Sheffield Massive fans to another dimension through its sheer size and scale of production that includes a dazzling combination of lasers, screens, pyro technics, and theatricals. The patented formula of tough trance will be taken to new limits by the Gatecrasher dream line up including, Paul Oakenfold with one of his increasingly rare UK sets, trancemeister Paul Van Dyk, DJ Tiësto, Talla 2XLC from Germany and Italy’s finest export, Mauro Picotto will be showcasing his first UK live performance in addition to a stunning DJ set; not to mention residents Scott Bond, Matt Hardwick and Nick Riley. This arena is guaranteed total roadblock.
After their amazing show at the Summer Sound System 2001, the Chemical Brothers are back but this time they’re live and exclusive. They’ll be supported by no less than Groove Armada who’ll be providing the second live performance in what will probably be this year’s best arena at any dance festival: The Chemical Generation Live Arena. A star studded line-up has been amassed that reads like clubland’s elite: Sasha, Dave Clarke, Darren Emerson and the award-winning Stanton Warriors.
Tidy Trax will take it fast and furious for the harder generation. Every hard house fan will be salivating at the gob-smacking line up of club favourites the Tidy Boys, Anne Savage, Rob Tissera, Lisa Lashes and Signum. Summer Sound System will be the only festival you can catch the Tidy Boys. Health warnings will be on display before entering this arena and not just because of the exceptional laser displays. From sun up till sun down, this arena will rock.
Bed transports two of New York’s most infamous residences to the heart of the Summer Sound System. Gatecrasher have custom designed a state of the art arena that gives two of dance’s biggest deities their own space to work the crowd like only they can. The likes of The Bed Complex has never been seen before and is an example of Gatecrasher’s ability to break boundaries and set the standards for others to follow. This area features two dance floors – Bedroom 1 and 2 - and a separate bar, Vip and cloakroom. Bedroom 1 is ‘Be Yourself in Bed’ where uberlord Danny Tenaglia takes it dark, tribal and twisted. Joining him will be radio 1’s Pete Tong, Futureshock dx’n’fx, Ralph Lawson, Tom Stephan, and special guests Mutiny.
Bedroom 2 recreates Little Louie Vega’s New York based club night ‘Dance Ritual’. The Master at Work will be presiding over a crowd of stylish house lovers and joined by a finger lickin’ line up of international talent. For the first time in the UK, Louie will be doing a ‘Dex n FX’ set with the legendary Francois K. Louie will also be joined by Kenny Dope, Dimitri from Paris, Los Amigos Invisibles from Venezuela and Danny Rampling. Both arenas will be hot and intimate. Attention to detail is paramount with blacked-out walls, low ceilings and specially sprung wooden floors.
Temperatures soar higher still when Carl Cox makes clubland history with his very own Carl Cox Global Arena. The DJ demi-god will be joined live by Green Velvet Live and a Cajmere DJ set, Trevor Rockcliffe, Umek and Valentino and one of 2002’s brightest stars, C1. Techno fans will be mesmerised in this dark and intimate arena, that will be a den of dirty basslines and relentless beats.
Bedrock are packing up the decks, recreating their heavenly vibe and heading for the fields for the first time ever. The world’s number 1 DJ John Digweed will be joined by ‘son of god’ Sasha and will be playing one of their once-in-a-lifetime back-to-back sets in the Bedrock Arena alongside Sander Kleinenberg, Nick Warren and James Zabeila. It’s rare to see these two play together but there’s no doubt that in the emotive atmosphere of the Summer Sound System they’ll feed off the crowd’s energy and you will see them at their most exceptional.
No dance festival would be complete without the sound of drum and bass. Gatecrasher present DRUM&BASSARENA AKA breakbeat.co.uk with a line-up of world heavy weights, including Dillinja & Lemon D, Roni Size & Dynamite, Craze & Plus One, Fabio, Hype and DJ Marky & Patife (Brasil). The most common complaint about festivals is that sound systems are too quiet but not here! The world record breaking Valve Sound System is the world’s only purpose built D&B sound system and features in the Guinness Book of Records. Dillinja says “We’re coming with 90K of brutal bass - it’s gonna shake down the whole place”. News hot off the press is that Slipknot band member number zero, will be doing his first ever solo gig in the UK in this arena. Are you ready for this?
Continuing the urban theme, Radio 1’s DJ Spoony presents Twice As Nice, the most popular night on the scene. The London underground, including Masterstepz, Luck & Neat, Pied Piper and Mikee B, will turn out in strength for this awesome event to infuse their two-step flava. Spoony sums it up: “Twice as Nice are the kings and queens of clubland and are renowned for our parties worldwide. We’ve got some wicked plans for the Gatecrasher Summer Sound system.”
The Bud Bus, a festival favourite, will be upholding the carnival spirit with an infectious and eclectic mix of beats and rhymes. DJs David Holmes fresh from the success of Ocean’s 11, Rob Da Bank and Soul Wax will have free reign to work their funk-infused magic on the party massive. Additional extras will be the stylish Strongbow lounge featuring the Burnitblue DJs playing their highly popular fun and funky sets guaranteed to rock the party, funfair rides, and a Vestax DJ School for the budding wannabes to pick up tips from their heroes.
Gatecrasher’s reputation for high production values is once again in full display at the Summer Sound System. They have gone to huge efforts to cater for every need of their 40,000 guests.
