The arrival of a new species of Techno
The success experienced by Spanish artists Oscar Mulero, Christian Wünsch, Reeko and Exium are proof that the fittest survive the test of time, and their unexpected collaboration Selección Natural will establish a new milestone in the evolution of Techno.
Oscar Mulero, Christian Wünsch, Reeko and Exium embark on a new project called Selección Natural that joins the ingenuity of each artist in a collection of four releases, each one from a label of one the four artists. Specifically, Warm Up, Tsunami, Mental Disorder and Nheoma—respetively the labels directed by Mulero, Wünsch, Reeko and Exium—will launch an EP with an original track composed by the label owner plus a remix from each of the other three artists. Although they have previously collaborated on other releases, this is the first time all four will appear together on the same EP.
Selección Natural (as in the biology term “natural selection” when translated to English) represents the coming together of Spain’s finest producers of dark techno, and they will celebrate this collaboration with an album release party on on the 15 November at the venue Sala Jardin in Gijon (Asturias, Spain).
“The idea behind this project is to unite those of us in Spain who produce this style of techno and create a kind of collection of EPs in which you can hear each’s particular approach to taking on this style,” stated Reeko, the author of the first release that will come out on his label Mental Disorder. Reeko’s original track will be accompanied by the three remixes contributed by the other artists. “We hope these releases become new favorites for techno lovers,” he added.
Selección Natural Part 1 (md10) is scheduled to come out in November of this year. The second part will hit the streets the following month with an original track from Exium on their label Nheoma, and the other two releases will follow suit in January and February 2009 on Tsunami (Wünsch) and then Warm Up (Mulero). All four releases will be distributed by Triple Vision.
Oscar Mulero has left his indelible mark on the best chapters of dance music history on the Iberian Peninsula. With an impecable résumé and a career as long as it has been resilient, this international Madrileño has made a name for himself with dark and abstract atmospheric sounds, becoming a star deejay and producer, whose name has appeared all over the world on the labels and charts of other great artists.
"This is basically our way of saying ‘Hey! We’re still here—we haven’t gone anywhere!’ We have continued to do what we do, what we believe and we haven’t doubted it for a second, aside from whatever style is the current trend. I think this project is something fans of this style will really appreciate. It’s also kind of a way to thank them. Musically speaking, I thought it was a great idea for the four of us to collaborate since we tend to produce similar material. Our material works well together in DJ sets, so I’m sure it will work just as well in Selección Natural," stated Oscar.
Although he was born in Monaco, Christian Wünsch has spent the majority of his life in northern Spain where he still resides and produces music. With more than 60 releases on various labels, he has become a worldwide reference in his field. Wünsch’s hardwork has earned him a position on the line ups of the best clubs and festivals all over the world, which also includes him being the first Spanish artists to perform in the mecca of techno, Detroit. His labels Tsunami Records and Nine are indispensable parts of any respectable record bag. "It was time for the four of us to do something together. After all, we’re some of the few that have yet to raise the white flag and have continued in this particular battle… Without a doubt, this is a promising project," Christian confirmed.
Reeko is a young producer that has successfully put his creativity to the test with every release from his labels Mental Disorder, Evidence, Emphatix and others like Theory, Integrale, Symbolism and Inceptive. Both his live performances and DJ sets reveal Reeko’s control and precision with a mixer, and he always incorporates the atmospheric sounds and base that has helped him to define his own style.
Valentín Corujo and Héctor Sandoval are the two creative minds behind the sought-after duo Exium, the personification of high-quality, classy techno. Aside from their releases on their own label Nheoma, the Exium boys have collaborated with national and international artists on labels like Planet Rhythm, Tsunami, Warm Up, Main Out, Zet, Equator, Numb and Audio Assault. With more than 40 albums on the market and a variety of remixes, Exium continues to pave their own path in the world of electronic music.
According to Valentín: “Aside from sharing the same tastes in music, we’re also joined by a good friendship. Appearing and playing together on the same night will be such a treat. There will be a lot of good music, that’s for sure!"
