So how did you first get involved with dance music and how long did it take you to establish that you liked your music harder than most?
I’ve been DJing professionally since 1992, I was one of the first UK DJs to publicly play techno in a rave environment and because I was following German and Belgian record labels like PCP , Adam and Eve, Labworks — stuff like that, these labels were like the pioneers of “hardcore techno” so as the music progressed into deeper and darker places, I just went with it. I don’t play hard for hard sake - I just like music with “balls”!
Do you think that hardcore techno and gabba get a bad rep too much of the time?
If you ask me — quite frankly here in the UK I don’t think that is at all true —maybe back in its infancy (‘93-‘94). Gabba in Rotterdam and gGrmany may have entertained a few neo Nazis for a second….but this is 12 years later — and I think the music has matured along with the audience ……I didn’t think it even HAD any sort of rep here in England!
We know about the hardcore techno/gabba scenes in the UK and in Holland...but where else have you been on your travels that likes a drop of the hard stuff?
I do about 3-4 gigs a month in Holland now - but I’ve also been frequenting France, Germany, Spain and Switzerland just to name a few. Since Third Movement have become my European agents, my work in mainland Europe has trebled - and I’m loving every minute of it
You are playing at the massive NYE-NEC event in the Hardcore Heaven XTREME arena at the end of the year. Do the XTREME events give you a platform to play your music to a crowd who don’t normally hear it?
I’m very familiar with the Hardcore Heaven crowd now, and with a gig like New Year’s Eve, you just want it in party mode…so as my usual NYE strategy goes, I’ll be playing something old – something new — and anything that seems to fit “the moment”.
Are there any other DJs on the line-up for NYE-NEC that you are looking forward to checking out?
To be honest — as soon as I’m done I have to fly like the wind as I have other bookings….busy time of year for us jockeysluts you know……
What do you make of these “neo-rave” clubs like Bangface in London who are mixing up breakcore, gabba, techno, DnB and all sorts? Something new and fresh or over-hyped?
I have played for Bangface twice now - and I think they are completely the mutts nuts! To go in a venue and not even worry about alienating anyone as they are up for FUCKING EVERYTHING! And I’m telling you….it IS neo rave…as fuck….it’s like the old rave ethic of just each DJ doing something different from the last, and the atmosphere is just electric. Something new, and in my opinion UNDER hyped….recognise : )
Is there music that you consider too “extreme” to play in any of your sets? Do you have any rules when it comes to tempo etc?
Absolutely….I have records so hard the velocity of them would knock your fucking teef out : ). It’s all down to observation and reading the crowd…if they aren’t going for something, I’ll just change direction.
What are your other musical interests aside from the stuff you play in clubs and produce?
I’m really into drum and bass and have started doing trax as The DJ Producer (I did a few DnB 12”s under the pseudonym suspicious circumstance in the late ‘90s). I’m also mad with remixes and new projects for next year…I’m really liking a lot of the dubstep stuff that’s around at the moment….
A lot of people consider gabba and hardcore techno to be very much focused around anger. Do you think there are other emotions that these genres evoke?
Angry? I never really thought it sounded “angry”. It’s just good fun at the end of the day….don’t ask me to analyse. I just like really intense noise - be it at 140BPM or 240BPM. AS LONG AS IT ROCKS!
The occasional problems associated with gabba raves in Holland are well documented. Do you find that events in the UK are generally trouble free?
NO WAY DUDE.
I’ve been going to Holland SOLID for 2 years now. And I’ve seen MORE violence/attitude/stress here in UK than I’ve ever seen in Holland.……FACT. Which is crazy, because I’ve been DJing at gigs like Thunderdome, Masters of Hardcore, Raving Nightmare….all of which have attendances of 15,000+….and I see NO trouble…..yet here in the UK we have more fighting at 700 people club nights….what’s up with that? I just try and play music to have fun….not fight….even if what I play is bordering “violent”! Hahahahaha.

DJ sets hebben me van Hellfish tot nu toe ook beter kunnen boeien dan die van Producer, set op PRSPCT was echt te vet.

hellfish live > producer live : bijde zeer vet maar het scratchen van hellfish doet het hem, beter gaat producer het ook zo aanpakken maar ja hij is net begonnen met een live act
hellfish dj > producer dj : bijde wisselvallig heb vette sets gehoord maar ook mindere.. maar hellfish kan van een kut set qua platen nog een boeiend iets maken door stevig scratch werk. ook vind ik zijn platenkeuze vaak net wat beter
