For all the people that would like to find the fitting translation for some Dutch words or sentences...

Try asking here and you could get the right translation for the situation (Y)

That way, the English speaking people could learn some more Dutch and vice versa (F)

*For the record... This is a serious thread, so please keep it that way ;) *

Phantom... you're talking about the way things are spoken.. The way it "sounds"... the pronunciation, that's something different aswell. ;)

The only way I could think of to translate what I mean is... "The way Dutch people say certain things". But something tells me there's a one-word-translation for what i just said.

Do you know what I mean know? :)

That's something that's pretty close to what I mean.

Too bad there isn't a one-word translation so far.

Which dictionary are you using? :)
Waarschuw beheerder
Some words are not translateble, because they are tipical for a language.
At least, they are not littarally translateble.
The advancement of a sense in Englisch is differently then in Dutch.

It's almost the same with telling jokes..
It's funny in one language, because of the typical aspect, while when translated it ain't funny at all (or not understood as to be funny).

It works the same way with locutions, imo.

Try : "manusje van allus" :p

Example of a litteral translation :D

Ik ben vandaag gaan dansen

I am today going dancing....... (litteral)

I went dancing today <-- that's how it should be :)

see........... the dictionary doesn't tell you how to compose the sentence :P

I know that Tijgertjuh ;)

That's the reason I started this thread the first place...

Because literal translations aren't correct... So If anyone would like to know a certain translation of a Dutch phrase or word, you can ask it here, because phrases aren't in the dictionary, youre right :)

Toch wel leuk are 3 different words...

And is translated as "fun(ny) anyhow" I guess...

The sentence is "Alles wat ik doe is toch wel leuk".

Translation... Everything I do is fun(ny) anyhow.

Although funny is translated "Grappig", something other people laugh about.

dubbelzinnig = ambiguous

Dubbelzinnigheid = impressible to explain in two different manners :)

apparently, according to Google, a "minger" is an ugly person (see: http://www.amiaminger.co.uk/index2.php)

and I couldn't find "glatty" :(

Me either. Tony (LondonGuy) thinks it means "chubby" though.
