Thousands of years ago, in the pre monarchic era, psychedelic/entheogenic substances where publicly known world wide and were respected for ... alle » their ability to bring forth the divine, Yahweh, God, The Great Spirit, etc., by the many cultures who used them. Often the entire tribe or community would partake in the entheogenic rites. These rites were often used in initiation into adulthood, for healing, to help guide the community in the decision process, and to bring the direct religious experience to anyone seeking it, that might take these psychedelic sacraments properly.

In the pre literate world, the knowledge of psychedelic plant sacraments, as well as fertility rites and astronomical knowledge surrounding the sun, stars, and zodiac, known as astrotheology, were anthropomorphized into human/god like beings so their stories and practices could be passed down for generations. Weather changes over millenniums caused environmental changes that altered the available foods and plant sacraments available in the local vicinity. If a tribe lost its shamanic El-der (El - God), all of the tribe's knowledge of their plant sacraments as well as astronomical knowledge would be lost

When in the depression years, the wife of Dutch Prime Minister Colijn recommended eating fish head soup, the question was raised who the hell ate the fish. Darwin's Nightmare, zooming in on the current consequences of biological and social Darwinism, eliminates any misunderstanding. A couple of decades ago, the Nile perch was planted in Lake Victoria, in the heart of Africa, in order to conduct a scientific experiment. It turned out that this rapacious fish was such a sturdy survivor that in no time almost all other fish species living in the gigantic lake became extinct. The demand for Nile perch filet on the global market increased, so a large-scale fish industry developed in the region. The soberly registered images of the fishing town Mwanza in Tanzania reveal a degrading situation. While hundreds of tons of Nile perch fillet are flown to Europe and Japan every day, the starving local population is forced to bake up a frugal meal from fish-offal. Meanwhile, loads of armaments are flown into the continent on the outward flight; the bloody African wars appear to be very lucrative to many. People suffering from AIDS are disregarded. Their numbers are growing fast, but the church considers the use of condoms a mortal sin. The statements by businessmen, guards, prostitutes, street kids and pilots give little cause for optimism.

In de jaren zeventig verliest kritisch links terrein; niemand gelooft meer in de revolutie. In plaats van partijgebonden groepen als Maoïsten, Leninisten en Marxisten ontstaan nieuwe activistische bewegingen die opkomen voor vrouwenrechten, homo's, dieren, huisvesting en de Derde Wereld. Ze vechten tegen kernenergie en voor een beter milieu. Met succes bestrijden tientallen actiegroepen sociale misstanden. Ze slagen erin om een aantal wezenlijke veranderingen in de maatschappij door te voeren. Er kwamen geen kruisraketten, bont werd afkeurenswaardig, vrouwen kregen het recht op abortus, homo's mogen huwen en Zuid-Afrika werd verlost van het apartheidsregime.

Maar hoe goed deze actiegroepen het ook voor hadden met de wereld, ze waren bij voorbaat verdacht. Net als de CPN direct na de oorlog, worden zij stelselmatig geïnfiltreerd door de BVD en later de AIVD. Dat heeft een enorme weerslag op kritisch links en leidt tot paranoïde gedrag, sociale uitsluiting, versplintering en radicalisering. De aanslagen van 11 September en de moord op Fortuyn en van Gogh, betekenen een verdere uitbreiding van de macht van de geheime diensten. Wetswijzigingen komen als hamerstuk door de Tweede Kamer.
Wie radicaal denkt, is al verdacht, zonder dat er een strafbaar feit gepleegd is. "Gedeeld gedachtegoed" noemen ze dat. En daarmee staat de deur wagenwijd open voor op grote schaal afluisteren, schaduwen, dossiervorming en preventieve hechtenis.

Maar wat zijn de gevólgen van de uitgebreide bevoegdheden? Wie controleert deze macht? Welke mensen bepalen dat andere mensen gevaarlijk zijn en waarom? Kunnen sociale misstanden nog wel ongestraft aan de kaak gesteld worden?
Onderzoeksbureau Jansen en Janssen onderzocht de handel en wandel van BVD en AIVD. Net als hun Nijmeegse collega en oud-activist Louis Sévèke, die vorig jaar november, vermoord werd. Een moord die tot op heden onopgelost is, al zijn de speculaties niet van de lucht.

Radicaal denken leidde in het verleden tot vooruitgang en emancipatie. Maar de speelruimte wordt kleiner en kleiner.
Met onderzoeksbureau Jansen en Janssen kijken we terug naar het linkse verleden, het heden en de toekomst. Door gesprekken met deelnemers aan "De Grootste Volksopstand van Nederland": de kraak van de Piersonstraat in Nijmegen. Met Groenfront over de acties tegen de Betuwelijn. Met advocaat Prof. Ties Prakken over de verwikkelingen rond de RARA aanslagen, de justitiële dwalingen en de onzekere toekomst van radicaal denken. En tenslotte met Tweede Kamerlid Wijnand Duyvendak (Groen Links) over zijn actieverleden in Onkruit en de kritiekloze houding van collega-kamerleden inzake de uitbreiding van de bevoegdheden van geheime diensten en politie.
