In de jaren zeventig verliest kritisch links terrein; niemand gelooft meer in de revolutie. In plaats van partijgebonden groepen als Maoïsten, Leninisten en Marxisten ontstaan nieuwe activistische bewegingen die opkomen voor vrouwenrechten, homo's, dieren, huisvesting en de Derde Wereld. Ze vechten tegen kernenergie en voor een beter milieu. Met succes bestrijden tientallen actiegroepen sociale misstanden. Ze slagen erin om een aantal wezenlijke veranderingen in de maatschappij door te voeren. Er kwamen geen kruisraketten, bont werd afkeurenswaardig, vrouwen kregen het recht op abortus, homo's mogen huwen en Zuid-Afrika werd verlost van het apartheidsregime.

Maar hoe goed deze actiegroepen het ook voor hadden met de wereld, ze waren bij voorbaat verdacht. Net als de CPN direct na de oorlog, worden zij stelselmatig geïnfiltreerd door de BVD en later de AIVD. Dat heeft een enorme weerslag op kritisch links en leidt tot paranoïde gedrag, sociale uitsluiting, versplintering en radicalisering. De aanslagen van 11 September en de moord op Fortuyn en van Gogh, betekenen een verdere uitbreiding van de macht van de geheime diensten. Wetswijzigingen komen als hamerstuk door de Tweede Kamer.
Wie radicaal denkt, is al verdacht, zonder dat er een strafbaar feit gepleegd is. "Gedeeld gedachtegoed" noemen ze dat. En daarmee staat de deur wagenwijd open voor op grote schaal afluisteren, schaduwen, dossiervorming en preventieve hechtenis.

Maar wat zijn de gevólgen van de uitgebreide bevoegdheden? Wie controleert deze macht? Welke mensen bepalen dat andere mensen gevaarlijk zijn en waarom? Kunnen sociale misstanden nog wel ongestraft aan de kaak gesteld worden?
Onderzoeksbureau Jansen en Janssen onderzocht de handel en wandel van BVD en AIVD. Net als hun Nijmeegse collega en oud-activist Louis Sévèke, die vorig jaar november, vermoord werd. Een moord die tot op heden onopgelost is, al zijn de speculaties niet van de lucht.

Radicaal denken leidde in het verleden tot vooruitgang en emancipatie. Maar de speelruimte wordt kleiner en kleiner.
Met onderzoeksbureau Jansen en Janssen kijken we terug naar het linkse verleden, het heden en de toekomst. Door gesprekken met deelnemers aan "De Grootste Volksopstand van Nederland": de kraak van de Piersonstraat in Nijmegen. Met Groenfront over de acties tegen de Betuwelijn. Met advocaat Prof. Ties Prakken over de verwikkelingen rond de RARA aanslagen, de justitiële dwalingen en de onzekere toekomst van radicaal denken. En tenslotte met Tweede Kamerlid Wijnand Duyvendak (Groen Links) over zijn actieverleden in Onkruit en de kritiekloze houding van collega-kamerleden inzake de uitbreiding van de bevoegdheden van geheime diensten en politie.

The New Rulers of the World is a 2001-2002 documentary film produced, written and presented by John Pilger on the consequences of globalisation, taking Indonesia as the primary example of the serious problems with the new globalization. Pilger's central thesis is that the "New Rulers" alluded to in the title are, in fact, the old rulers in new clothes. To Pilger, the colonialism of the 19th and early 20th centuries has experienced a return to grace following World War II (when it was realised that Nazism was a form of imperialism) in the form of globalisation.
