Gothic is a music genre that originated during the late 70's (not to be confused with gothic metal). The genre was defined as a movement independent of punk during the early 80s. Some gothic bands were more artistic and introspective than punk. Gothic was about dark themes and intellectual movements such as gothic horror, romance, existentialism and nihilism.
In the early 90s the genre disappeared almost completely into the background. Only in Germany it remained popular. In the Netherlands, only in Amsterdam were the bigger parties. On these parties were alternative music combined with old and new New Wave, EBM and Gothic from Germany.
The second wave came in the second half of the 90s slowly populair. An interesting phenomenon in this is that many currents, which in the 80s outside the Gothic were there during the 90s more and more associated with it were. Genres like EBM, Industrial, Darkwave and Neofolk became part of the motley collection of styles that can conveniently together under the term "Gothic". This second wave is more of a new wave flow than a genuine revival of the Gothic although initial flow is still part of the package. Actually, during the 90s the label "New Wave" was swapped for "Gothic".
Although the gothic culture over the past decade has seen a resurgence in the form of gothic metal and cyber gothic, feasts which are the authentic EBM, Electro, Industrial and Darkwave rotated become increasingly scarce. Only a small number of smaller parties, including Morticia in Hengelo, bogged down in more techno-oriented parties and remain true to the rich history of this dark music genres.
But Gothic is not dead yet, the Raven Party is like a phoenix from the ashes. In this new party, organized by a bunch of fanatical fans, will Willemeen in Arnhem again pay attention to the original musical values of the Gothic scene. Four enthusiastic DJs have joined forces to give you the best adrenaline-pumping EBM and industrial and most atmospheric and dark Dark Wave to present where your shoes will worn.

Gothic is een muziekgenre dat ontstond gedurende late jaren 70 (niet te verwarren met gothic metal). Het genre werd gedefinieerd als een beweging onafhankelijk van punk gedurende de vroege jaren 80. Sommige gothicbands waren meer kunstzinnig en introspectief dan punk. Gothic ging over duistere thema’s en intellectuele bewegingen zoals gothic horror, romantiek, existentialisme en nihilisme.
In het begin van de jaren 90 verdween het genre vrijwel geheel naar de achtergrond. Alleen in Duitsland bleef het populair. In Nederland werden alleen in Amsterdam nog grotere feesten gehouden. Op deze "Inrichting-feesten" werd alternatieve muziek gecombineerd met oude en nieuwe, uit Duitsland afkomstige, New Wave, EBM en Gothic.
De tweede golf kwam in de tweede helft van de jaren 90 langzaam bovengronds. Een interessant verschijnsel in dezen is dat veel stromingen, die in de jaren 80 buiten de Gothic vielen, er gedurende de jaren 90 meer en meer mee geassocieerd werden. Genres als EBM, Industrial, Darkwave en Neofolk gingen deel uitmaken van de bonte verzameling stijlen die men gemakshalve samen onder de noemer "Gothic" begon te plaatsen. Deze tweede golf is meer een new wave-stroming dan een daadwerkelijke opleving van de Gothic hoewel deze oorspronkelijke stroming nog steeds deel uitmaakt van het pakket. Feitelijk werd gedurende de jaren 90 het etiket "New Wave" verruild voor "Gothic".
Alhoewel de gothic-cultuur het afgelopen decennia een opleving gekend heeft in de vorm van gothic-metal en cybergothic, zijn feesten waarop de authentieke EBM, Electro, Industrial en Dark Wave gedraaid worden steeds schaarser geworden. Alleen een klein aantal kleinere feesten, waaronder Morticia in Hengelo, verzanden niet in meer techno-georiënteerde feesten en blijven trouw aan de rijke historie van deze donkere muziekgenres.
Maar Gothic is nog niet dood, de Raven Party is als een phoenix uit de as herrezen. Op deze nieuwe party, georganiseerd door een stel fanatieke liefhebbers, zal in Willemeen in Arnhem opnieuw aandacht geschonken worden aan de oorspronkelijke muzikale waarden van de Gothic scene. Vier enthousiaste dj's hebben de handen inéén geslagen om je de beste adrenaline-verhogende EBM en industrial en de meeste sfeervolle en duistere Dark Wave te presenteren waarop je zeker je schoenzolen gaat verslijten.
