LINEUP
The Berlin-based Splitter Orchester will perform a collective, improvised session and present their Split Tour project as a world premiere. Some people of the orchestra will also do solo performances. The legendary Aksak Maboul, founded in 1977 by Marc Hollander of the equally legendary Crammed Discs record label, will be performing their acclaimed 2020 album ‘Figures’ for the first time in front of a live audience. O Yama O, the Japanese duo taking on Japanese folk music through myth, tradition and routine, will be performing together with David Cunningham who first came to prominence as a member of The Flying Lizards and who also works as a composer and developer of sound installations.
Gavsborg of Equiknoxx Music will bring his new definition of dancehall and dance music to the weekend and Holy Tongue, Valentina Magaletti and Deadboy, their free-form, high energy, spiritual dub-dance music. Pessimist’s music fuses drum & bass, early experimental hip hop and the bleak abstraction of Birmingham techno. He is one today’s most original producers in club music. Poison Anna’s music heralds a new era in pop and club music.
Monokultur delve into ambient, noise and pop, influenced by the obscure side of 80s electronica and driven by contemporary perspectives on experimental sound and noise. A Trio from Lebanon separate boundaries between genres to come up with their own distinct musical language. Phuong-Dan is a renowned DJ based in Hamburg, Germany. For over a decade now, he is both resident and host at legendary St. Pauli underground venue Golden Pudel Club. Spivak is a musician and a sound artist based in Cyprus whose work is a play on the nuances and poetics of pop. Her live performances jump from intimate sonic liturgies to bursts of energetic and often deconstructed 90s inspired techno. Ulla is a Philadelphia-based ambient artist whose work is soothing and uneasy in equal measure, insightful without absolute definition.
There will furthermore be performances by acclaimed acoustic and electronic composer and performer Sarah Davachi and Swedish electroacoustic and drone composer and performer Maria W Horn on the organ. Mika Oki’s immersive black box experience Parhelion will be on show at the Vorn Und Oben art gallery and scientist, musician and instrument builder Daniel Jodocy will be artist-in-residence for the weekend. The Saturday of the weekend will feature the handcrafted 54KOLAKTIV sound system, open air, with performances and DJ-sets by Felix Hall, Pretty Sneaky, master of the non-linear, polyrhythmic groove, austro-dub specialist Ulrich Troyer, Comité Hypnotisé, a new dub project by Belgian rock musician Tim Vanhamel, Dizzy Ventilators and the 54KOLAKTIV DJ-crew.
Tribe Of Colin uses an understated and improvisational approach to house and techno, at times conjuring up a drone-like feel with only percussive elements. Rie Nakajima and Pierre Berthet will present an installation and performance at IKOB - Museum of Contemporary Art.
Other artists on the lineup are Ameryc De Tapol, man behind the Stroom〰 label Nosedrip, Seppe Gebruers, Eric Thielemans and Thijs Troch presenting their new project for harmonium and percussion, a performative installation on ceramics by Antwerp’s Maika Garnica and Aiko Devriendt, violinist Paul Pankert, ML, Leila Hassan of Sea Urchin , Hungarian Laurine Frost presenting his jazz noir dub fusion, Martin Brandlmayer with his Vive Les Fantômes project, Jahb Less, Elisa Kühnl, Edition d’Art an the 54Kolaktiv DJ crew.

PRACTICAL
With vaccination programs now in full swing and measures in Belgium and worldwide slowly being lifted, Meakusma is happy to be able to set up a day program as well as a club-oriented night program. We do however keep on monitoring the situation and the measures taken by the Belgian government closely. There is room for hope for festivals and all things music and the arts, allowing for slightly bigger audiences. Should restrictions be reintroduced, we will of course take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of everyone attending the weekend. The way things are right now, people attending the weekend will need to be fully vaccinated or show proof of a negative PCR-test from the day of attending itself, at the entrance. Only then entrance will be allowed and furthermore masks and social distancing will then not be necessary.
VENUES
The heart of the Meakusma Weekend will be the Eupen Plaza, an abandoned shopping mall in the centre of Eupen. We will be using various rooms in the mall for the concerts and club nights as well as the open air parking deck for the sound system of 54KOLAKTIV. Eupen Plaza is a flexible venue with many rooms and spaces that allows us to adapt to different circumstances, also if the pandemic would force us to. It has some palm trees right in the middle. They might just add a holiday flair to the proceedings, dystopian or otherwise.
One room of the Eupen Plaza shopping mall will be transformed into a radio station that will feature continuous action throughout the weekend. Dedicated concerts, DJ-sets, artists talks and interviews will be taking place there, all this in collaboration with LYL radio and others.
Furthermore there will be concerts and installations at the Friedenskirche, the Vorn und Oben art gallery, the IKOB - Museum of Contemporary Art and at various public spaces throughout Eupen.
