How come? Hong Kong was a British crown dominion until '97 :/
I'm born in Rotterdam, so I had to deal with a lot of different cultures in my daily life.
I learned to speak fluent Dutch and English, because communicating with other cultures is something you can learn from.
So it doesn't matters you can't speak Dutch, people in Holland speak English to, at least most of them.

i haven't lived in hong kong for my whole life. am from the mainland of china (zhengjian), and left when I was 12 to hong kong with my parents...
Well, I can say that living in the Netherlands without speaking Dutch is not difficult. Many people speaks English very well and it really makes things easy. But on the other hand it can be also a problem cuz I can explain ma self in English and solve ma problems without speaking Dutch which means You can not learn the Dutch language. If u want to learn it, u hav to use da language. I think most of the Dutch ppl speaks good English cuz of da Dutch TVs show the movies and other shows in original way with Dutch subtitle it really helps as well.
I don't know about duchify'ng your perception, I'll try Madar. My take on it is it's a nice sounding language, unlike Irish and the people are easily known say walking down the street. I'm alright at reading Dutch and if you speak English or will be for the next two years, pronounciation will be the only tricky part. I think people who don't speak Dutch should atleast try a few sentences here and there. I like the parties too, a guy from Belgium at a party talked to me for a few minutes, all I could do was nod my head, it didn't matter.

True. However you'll get a different attention from the dutch if you're able to speak their language. If you don't, they don't know if you live here of if you're a tourist.
It's also handy if you can read dutch, for all the administrative and letters you receive for instance.
If you speak dutch, you'll also have more job opportunities.
True! Without Dutch it is so difficult to find a job!
I am not saying I do not want to learn Dutch. The thing is Everybody speaks sum level of English in Holland which makes u to speak English rather than trying to speak Dutch:). I do know that Dutch ppl likes in when someone tries to speak their language (like in many countries)but for me in most of the situations u try to speak Dutch and native speaker do not understand you then you start to speak English which helps u at that momement but u do not learn the language. I do understand most of the written Dutch. Plus, I learned sum basic stuff and I am still studying Dutch. I would like to learn it definitly!
But I'm learning a bit Dutch too, just because I love it:)
Hey madár!!! Aren't u Hungarian???????

I thought you were Swedish actually; anyway that`s what i was talking about when i talked about the east european girls, nice :)

I don't try to learn Dutch, the reason is simple : Dutch people talk English well and i don't have any communication problems. They are used to foreign people that when i join a conversation, language turns to English, they don't mind it, which is cool, but they are used to this so much that they don't care about joining an English forum too much.

On the other hand, I'm quite sorry about the things i miss that are spoken around me; in this case i need to use my senses to understand what's going on; which helps sometimes.

Well, that's not really true.
There are a lot of international companies based in The Netherlands doing business all across Europe so if you speak English (and another language is a plus) you should be able to find something matching your experience. And of course, if you're fluent in dutch that opens more opportunities.
I am form Austrlia and I'm tall with red/blonde hair. When i was in Amsterdam everyone thought I was Dutch. I was only revealed when someone would speak to me in Dutch and i would give them a blank stare. But I liked they thought I was one fo them. Dutch people are the best. I am hoping to live in Amsterdam one day when i finnsih Univercity in AUS

I'm tall too with dark brown hair, and many people spoke to me in Dutch, especially when I was in Mistery Land and they asked me to drugs. :O
