The CIA did not funded the Al Qaida organisation, the Al Qaida organisation never received one penny from an non-Islamic source. Sheikh Usama had his own money, and the money from Sheiks who supporterd the Mujahideen from the Arabian peninsula such as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The CIA funded the Afghan Mujahideen, and the Arabs onder the Command of Sheikh Abdullah Azzam's (rahimahullah) and Osama bin Laden's Mujahideen Service Bureau, because their goal was to wage Jihaad against the Sovjet Kufars out of the Islamic land of Afghanistan. Those people wanted to help the Afghans to liberate their land and drive the Kufar out of the Islamic Afghanistan, and they got money from the CIA, the Pakistani ISI and some Arab intelligence agencies.
he Arabs who now form the greatest part of Al Qaida are the Egyptians and Arabs from country's like Algeria and Morocc and Libya. Those are people like Ayman al-Zawahiri, Abu Mustafa al-Yazid, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and Abu Hamza al-Muhajir. Those people fought in Afghanistan along side the Arabs of Abdullah Azzam and Osama bin Laden, but they had a different agenda, Abdullah Azzam did not like it as Osama became closser to them.
The Arabs wanted to form an Islamic chalipate, an islamic state without borders from Spain to Indonesia. But to do that they have to wage Jihaad against the apostate regimes of the Islamic world in that time, just like they had done in Egypt with the assassination of president Anwar al-Sadat. But there was a problem there because the Abdullah Azzam front did not like that idea. Abdallah Azzam was a scholar in Islam, but the Egyptians are not scholars and they follow the Said Qutb and Khalid Islambouli.
Abdullah Azzam front just wanted to help the Afghan people and did not want to take part in this, but Osama Bin Laden did and he choose the side of the Egyptian radicals who now form a very big group wihtin Al Qaida leadership and even Mohammed Atta the leader of the hijackers on 9/11 was an Egyptian.
Abduallah Azzam died in 1989 and in the same year Al Qaida was founded in the Pakistan Afghanistan border region and Osama bin Laden was choosen as Emir because he had the money and the Egyptians had the Mujahideen to form this organastion, the goal of Al Qaida was to establish an Islamic state and train young Mujahideen for new Jihaad wherever the Jihaad was going to take place. There was NO Afghan in Al Qaida, there was no link with the CIA or other agencies. The Islamic countrys saw Al Qaida as a treath for them because they want to overtrhow all those regimes, and those Arab regimes have close ties with the CIA, so Al Qaida is a big enemy for the CIA.
And the CIA did not know Bin Laden untill 1996 when they set up a special unit for him to track him down.
CNN terrorism analsyt Peter Bergen, who interviewd Bin Laden in Afghanistand and wrote a book about him says the follow about this:
The story about bin Laden and the CIA -- that the CIA funded bin Laden or trained bin Laden -- is simply a folk myth. There's no evidence of this. In fact, there are very few things that bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri and the U.S. government agree on. They all agree that they didn't have a relationship in the 1980s. And they wouldn't have needed to. Bin Laden had his own money, he was anti-American and he was operating secretly and independently. The real story here is the CIA didn't really have a clue about who this guy was until 1996 when they set up a unit to really start tracking him.
Ayman al-Zawahiri wrote a book Knights Under the Prophet's Banner, which is also translated in English, he says this:
"While the United States backed Pakistan and the mujahidin factions with money and equipment, the young Arab mujahidin's relationship with the United States was totally different... The truth that everyone should learn is that the United States did not give one penny in aid to the mujahidin..."
