Concept

Eleven years down the line and Kozzmozz is still going strong! About 14 successful parties a year since we’ve been in Vooruit and numerous other ones before, we have lost count of how many exactly somewhere along the way …

But we haven’t forgotten all the joyful nights full of inspiring music : the atmosphere has never been better even though we still program the lesser known names and stay true to our original goal of promoting non-commercial electronic dance music ! When we do invite big names , they are the ones who are evolving with us and never without being accompanied by upcoming talents, both national and international.

For our 11th birthday, we bring you 5 rooms in which we have gathered three concepts, 8 international dj’s and live-acts and 11 national ones so that there’s something for everybody’s taste. The ones who have been there since the beginning and those who joined us later on our voyage through the musical universe …

The Artists

CONCERTZAAL : KOZZMOZZ : TECHNO

Planetary Assault Systems aka Luke Slater – DJ-set

Luke Slater is a very prolific recording artist working under several pseudonyms making a wide variety of electronic music. His story begins at the Mi Price record store, Croydon, where he worked alongside Colin Dale (no introductions necessary) and Alan Sage (recording partner-to-be) and moved on to Jelly Jam Records of Brighton where his recording career really began.

Luke's vinyl debut was unleashed in 1989 under the Translucent moniker entitled Momentary Vision. Released only as a white label it stood out for the fact that it was Detroit influenced and at the time the dance-floors rocked to the sound of the breakbea(s)t and so was a brave move that did not go unnoticed by the underground record clientele.

After a stream of further 12"s Morganistic was next, a beautifully chilled track, "In The Shadow", released on the obscure UK indie label Irdial. It was the label's most successful release and marked Luke's arrival as a leading light on the then blossoming UK scene alongside Black Dog, A.R.T, AFX Twin and B12.

However, it was not until his link-up with Peacefrog in 1993 when Luke began his X-Tront series and his Planetary Assault Systems outputs through which he became widely known and praised for, resulting in Luke being heralded as the UK torchbearer for the Detroit techno sound. Proving further the fact that Luke had really gained his status in the Techno premier league.

On the 1st April of this year Luke started his own label Mote-Evolver and released the new EP "Deep Heet Vol.1 EP!". So the long-awaited release of Planetary Assault Systems is now officially out on different digital formats (WAV, MP3, AIFF, AAC) and on 12 inch vinyl. All items are exclusively available via the online shop of the label.

Steve Rachmad (Music Man, Ion, NL)

Steve Rachmad is a globally known Dutch techno producer, DJ and remixer. By many, he is considered a father of Detroit techno in the Netherlands, respected in the world of electronic music for his deep, groovy sounds that tend to rest on impressive strings, melodies, funk and soul. His career has been reaching its highest peaks from 1996 up to the present time. Yet, it is somewhat less known that he has been in the music realms for 25 years by now.

Steve gets introduced to the house music in 1986. His attention is captured by the new sounds echoing mostly from Detroit and Chicago, i.e. by the work of artists such as Mr. Fingers and Derrick May. Following their style, Steve’s own style takes a new direction. He is soon to be found releasing for artists like Darren Emerson and Derrick May.

The incoming years are to be marked by numerous successful releases on labels such as 100% Pure, Underwater, Fragile, M-Plant, Tresor, etc. He also made a significant number of remixes, signed under various pseudonyms. Among Steve’s most respected releases is certainly his album “Secret Life of Machines,” which came out in 1996 under his pseudonym Sterac, and is up to this date considered as one of the all-time techno classics. About the same time his DJing path starts rapidly evolving as well. Until today, Steve shares his talent with the crowds all over the World. He occasionally spins disco and electro, but mainly techno.

Of all the fictitious names he used throughout his career to sign his productions, the ones that remained until today are Sterac, Ignacio, Dreg, Parallel 9, Adverse Match and Sterac Electronics. They appear on labels like Music Man, CLR, Jericho, Sino, etc. Steve also runs three labels of his own: Scorp, Ion, and an electro label Interpersonal //XP. The history of remixes continues into the present, including a variety of people, such as the Advent, Vince Watson, Kanzleramt, Mark Broom, Chris Liebing, etc. In the latest years, next to his characteristic techno sound, he also actively focuses on electro, stripping it down to the old-school feel. His latest Sterac Electronics remix of the vocal track Love Sweet Love (by Clashing Egos), and the “Night Heat” release on Music Man Records have ended up in the record bags of a wide variety of artists, from techno, to minimal, house and electro. He re-confirms his reputation as an artist with exquisite ear for technical qualities of sound, always returning to his soulful roots and maintaining the warmth of analogue-produced music.

Pacou Live ( Tresor, Cache Records, GER)

Pacou lived in Berlin all his life. Back in 1989 the sounds of House and Techno took off there. Starting out as a hobby, he became a record collector and went to many now legendary parties and club events. In 1993 he bought his first music equipment. Three years on, he produced, and then released the first records under the name "agent cooper" (on the label "Raw Music") and "Pacou" (on Tresor Records).

Soon after, Tresors record-label released Pacous first album "Symbolic Language", and he became a resident DJ at the club. The year 1998 marked a substantial progress in both DJ and production aspects of the work. He started playing DJ sets around Europe, Japan and Australia, and changed over to fulltime work on music and performing as DJ. The main release was the experimental techno style LP "No computer involved" on Tresor.
In september 1998 Pacou founded his own label "LL Records", for release of some of his own material and that of some friends. 1999 saw the continuation of his work, a 12" single called "A Universal Movement" and travels and showcases around the globe. Remixes for Ben Sims and Access 58 from UK were also done at the time.

Another LP format "State of mind" was released in March 2000, furthermore vinyl singles on the famous dutch label Djax-Up-Beats. Tour dates again ranged from Brasil to Australia. In fact traveling became more important - learning about other cultures and climates first hand changes views on life... Finally this website "www.pacou.com" was started in mid-2000. Musical projects for 2001 included releases on the German Konsequent imprint (album and singles), Music Man and Djax record labels...

He continued his work on Music Man label series "Rio Sketches", and started a new Livemusic / performance project "AUTOFOKUS", which released 3 vinyl singles in 2004/ 05. Tresor released another single "Last Man Standing" in Feb 2004 and a whole album "The Berlin Sessions" produced with Juan Atkins in 2005. The newest project Cache Records was started in May 2005. So far Pacou played in places of more than 20 countries, and so the story will continue... spreading the good vibe.

Gayle San (Equator, UK)

Gayle Sans career already began in the late ‘80s in her hometown Singapore. She started as a warm-up DJ for Bands such as Kool and the Gang, Earth Wind and Fire and the Commodores. Gayle's first steps into the London clubs were via DJing at record company parties, various one-off guest spots and fashion shows. Having honed her DJing skills and broadened her understanding of music, Gayle began to experiment with the harder side of dance music, particularly the lesser known techno sounds coming into Britain from Europe and the US.

Her chance to pioneer this music in England came when Gayle became resident at Universe's legendary Final Frontier club, at Club U.K. in south London, which then moved on to become Universe Voyager at their new club, the Complex in north London. Gayle's reputation spread like wildfire over the techno centres of Europe, most notably a residency once a month at the legendary Omen club in Frankfurt, the socalled 'Mecca of techno'. Other European and American dates have included some of the most underground clubs in the world. In 2000 she was voted number 6. of the most popular international DJs in Germany.

DJing has naturally led to various studio work. She has recorded tracks under the name Transmakus namely Universe Anthem and Violator which have been included on the Tribal Gathering 94 and 95 albums respectively. Gayle has also recorded a single 'Way of the Dragon' for Rainforest Records, mixed a live set for the official Tribal Gathering 96 album. On her own label Equator she released some solo Eps and collaboration Eps with Mark Williams.

In 1998 she mixed the CD from the Fine Audio Mix CD series. The success of this CD overwhelmed everyone who was involved in this project. The CD was sold out in just two months. In 1999 she released a new EP on Touch Tone. In february 2000 she released her Brickliners EP on Fine Audio Rec.

In the beginning of 2000 she released her second Mix CD called Gayle San at the wheels of steel on the new label Galvanic. For that release Gayle went on a big Worldtour bringing her into more then 30 clubs in just three months. She also started a new collaboration with Jam el mar (Jam and Spoon, Dance 2 Trance). This collaboration runs under the name Jamsan. The first release was released on the label Cry Baby. She released her Backbone ep on Black Nation from Kalamazzo, USA and in April her The Lab ep on Primate UK. As if this would be not enough she mixed the Titan Edition Techno on the Austrian Label XXX and did the official Compilation of the famous german rave Time Warp

In Summer 2001 she relaunched her own label Equator. The first release from the new series is a cooperation with Jay Denham and releases from Flatner Ingram, Justin Berkovi, Bryan Zentz, Cristian Varela, Keita Shinohara and many more will follow. Gayles idea is to give also lesser known producers from all over the world a platform to release their productions.

Diego ( Kanzleramt, SWI)

Diego Hostettler was born in 1980 in Bern, Switzerland (capital city:). As a child he grown up with jazz, at least cause his father was a professional jazz musician.
At the age of 6 he started to play the piano. At the age of 11-12 he focused more and more on rap music such as public enemy and ice t, but also by Todd Terry’s early Hip House tunes. After having bought two turntables and a mixer, he began to deejay in 1994.

In 1996 Diego started to build up his own studio. He sent out his first demo tapes in 1998. An introduction to Stefan Riesen from Phont Music in 1998 led to his first release. Towards the end of 1999 he got in touch with Heiko Laux and released the “Superpositions EP”, followed by several 12inches and 4 albums!

In the summer of 2000 Diego met the former drummer of legendary hardcore bands like Discharge and Flux of Pink Indians, Dave Elsmere aka Voco Derman. Diego and Dave were two of the first artists to upload their tracks in the early days of mp3.com. There they met and from then on they tried to develop a common factor.

Diego & Dave realized a common taste in music and share the same ideas about the free distribution of music. Chatting about “Plagiarism” on the net, both agree that the further development of a given musical system is rather interesting and not a thievery of ideas. Shorthand they decided to musically elaborate the Basic Channel like Dub-Techno and started producing. Of course all results were constantly uploaded and made public. (Over 77’000 downloads to Date !! :)

Having released 4 of the more technoid tracks as Diego & Voco Derman, the „Raster EP“ (ka 51) on Kanzleramt, a k2o mini-album, contains 8 of the calmer tracks, configured for the project name Shapes & Forms.

In 2001-2002 Diego played sets at clubs all around the globe. In 2003 Diego released his 3rd album “Instant Reality” (ka85) on Kanzleramt and new recordings for k20.

Diego´s current album “Open” (ka111) was released in September 2004. Based on techno, the album connects versatile song-styles and shows once more Diego´s professional skills in his production.

Tomaz ( Intec, Switch)

The musical roots of Tomaz sprung from his father's collection to the new wave and rock scene of the 70's and 80's. This was his sole inspiration for his early dj days. It wasn’t long before he started to introduce the first house and techno tunes to those wave/rock parties and to the Belgian airwaves on local radio stations. His obsession for music drove him towards a job at the BCM (now Enterprise) record store, where he still works today guiding music crazed lovers through the musical jungle.

In the late nineties Tomaz took it to a new level when he gave a first
shot at production with Kobbe. That was the birth of several 12's
on labels like Re-Load and Future Frontier. Next in the line of production were the successful collaborations with the Filterheadz (More House, the Latino techno hit "Los Hijos del Sol" and the major worldwide club hit "Sunshine" on Carl Cox' Intec label).
This was the moment when Tomaz moved from the local radio stations to the Belgian national radio Studio Brussel where he became the techno programmer for the weekly show Switch.

Techno isn’t where it stops; Tomaz also programms future hits and best classics of many genres and subgenres of electronic music on the same show. Listen to Tomaz spin and you will hear the reflection of his wide musical arena covering all layers of underground techno & house … and in this case, those tracks with clear Acid sounds.

2005 saw the release of the follow up single to "Sunshine". The Saturn Moons EP once again proved the musical diversity of Tomaz. After the Latin flavored releases, "Titan" a dreamy, string-fuelled anthem, like its predecessor, is played by all the big names. The future will bring more collaborations with the likes of Stanny Franssen, Sam Ostyn, Redhead, to name a few. Current residencies: Made In Brussels, Intenze, Switch.

Kr!z (News)

Kr!z story with electronic music started in 1997 after having walked through many genres of music. He didn’t need a lot of time to feel the heat of the vibe: it was just a comparison between his heartbeat and the one of energetic techno.

He earned spots on some main events in Belgium: he got invited by Kozzmozz (7th, 10th and now 11th anniversary) & Fuse, where he still plays on regular basis.

More was to come since he played all of Belgium major techno clubs … A demo of this solid pumping techno sound was picked up by the national radio show ‘Switch’ whom offered him a spot in the new talents room of I Love Techno.

The last 2 years his dj-schedule gets him all around Belgium while he also plays gigs across the borders in France and the Netherlands.

Andy Vaz LIVE (Background, GER)

Andy Vaz hails from Düsseldorf, Germany, the breeding ground of Kraftwerk.
Since 1997 Andy manages and curates Background Recordings, internationally acclaimed as being the most instrumental label to originate from Düsseldorf in the past decade. Long before Minimal Techno turned into a genre, and subgenre after subgenre was invented, Andy has already been concentrating on providing a cultural conduit for more minimal electronic music.

Some of the most influential international musicians of the minimal electronic music movement had their works presented on his Background Imprint. Artists such as: Sutekh, Jan Jelinek, Todd Sines, Terrence Dixon, Jeff Milligan, Akufen, Submania, Dean DeCosta, Rhythm Maker, Kit Clayton, Ectomorph, Deadbeat, Baby Ford, Stewart Walker, Donnacha Costello and many more.

Andy could not ignore his undeniable appreciation for the house movement and therefore, decided to start a second label in order to help facilitate the growing relationship between global deep house and minimal techno: "A touch of Class / ATC" was born.

In 2000, Andy Vaz released his own material. At first he started his Sound Variation [---] series. A set of 10 conceptual releases where as the sound can be defined by the criteria of one's imagination constrained only by the definition of it being 4/4 based electronic music without following any clearly defined linear sound aesthetic or concept. Sound Variation is based on the use of the same sounds, re-used throughout, giving each track another musical approach by pushing each instrument in a different compositional direction by re-arrangement, tone-shifting and by adding/changing effects in order to demonstrate that a defined production criteria brings forth maximal results through the process of limitation within a lo-fi aesthetic. The Andy Vaz vinyl series on the elusive and nameless label is therefore entitled [---].

Next to the series Andy Vaz also started putting out minimal techno dance material. Music that is focused on the Groove and is based on his rich experiences he collected as an internationally rewarded Live Act. Andy has build up an excellent reputation as a crowd shaking and unique sounding live act. Known for extended two hour dance live-sets to more abstract listening performances Andy proves to be diverse and suitable in various musical contexts.

Tom Dazing (Lessizmore, Toysforboys, Intenze)

With a mother who's teaching music and himself already playing the piano at the ago of 7, he was bound to end up in music someday. It was by the age of 14 that he first got inspired by electronic music.

Born in 1985 in a town called Aalst on the musical axis of Ghent-Brussels, and with music strengthening its grip on him, Tom Dazing found the way to the local record store by the age of 18. Consumed by the strength, power and instinctive structure of techno, the music that would control him up to now, he started visiting more and more underground parties. It was the only way to know how the music worked with the people. After a couple of local gigs he was asked to play as a SeSSioN resident. An offer that could not be refused. In the meanwhile Tom Dazing played on several parties throughout Belgium, together with artists like Aki, Alexander Kowalski, André Galuzzi, Marco Bailey, Pierre, Redhead, Tomaz, The Tresor residents, and in venues like Silo, Soundstation, Tijuana, Cirque Mystic, The Factory, Negasonic, Catacombes, Rector and so many more.

Currently he's maintaining residencies at SeSSioN, Intenze and Minimalicious. Always having been impressed by the minimal side of music, the revival of the click opened up many doors to present his music. Key elements such as vintage sounds, the bleep and the funk are to be found in a typical record.

He’s also active in the studio : check : Tom Dazing’s Intenze EP on Toysforboys and the upcoming Relocation EP on Lessizmore.

Spacid (Ultra, Retro Acid)

Born in Kortrijk but nowadays living in Ghent, Spacid is a multi-faceted DJ talent and party promotor. His musical interest was developed at a very young age. At first influenced by a wide range of musical genres (from classical music to new wave era club classics and Front 242), he was one of the first to focus on deep, garage and acid house. Later on he got involved in the experimental acid and early techno.

In 1994 the innovative parties of Funky Green Aliens, contributed to Spacid’s succes as dj and by 1997 he got booked at the biggest clubs and events in Belgium and abroad, such as Dance Valley, Ten Days Off and Kozzmozz. Spacid is known for his eagerness to push music forward, as well as bringing pumping sets in lots of genres. Here he will bring his famous electro sets as you can hear on parties like Body 2 Body and Elektron.

On Spacids own label Radius Records, he holds down the principles of seeking the right sound, the right mix between innovation and reference to the past.

Black Francis (Drop Acid not Bombs)

Black Francis’ musical interest started in the ‘80’s. His attention was first drawn towards hardrock and NWBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) of which he gathered a serious record-collection. But from the moment that New Beat conquered Belgium and the first house and techno records became available, he was caught by the virus of dance music.

He played his first records in Bugatti’s and Zanzibar in Kortrijk in 1988. Lots of locations, all over Europe, have followed since then. Black Francis plays both techno, house, Drum’n’Bass, Acid, Breakbeat and Ambient. His style is described as non-commercial, with good technique and always emotive.

Psychot-X (RRP, Acidbrainz.com)

Psychot-X started listening to electronic music at the age of 10 years with bands as Primus, Biohazard, Therapy…and discovered Trance, Techno and Retro at Club Jaguar in Torhout. The place where Trance-X (Nowadays better known as Cyrix) played every Friday and Saturday. Respect to Cyrix who was a big inspiration !

After a while he started to buy some techno records, mostly the hard stuff like Pounding Grooves, Peacefrog, Subhead,… Until he came across X5—Analogue Waste and started searching for Acid –New-Skool Acid-AcidCore. And still…it’s the one and only thing that can make him shake around the clock…

Parties he played at include Darkforce Arnhem NL, Skreepwerk, I Love Money, Footworxx, Beat Factory, FFWD Tielt, Catacombes, Sneak Attack, Antwerp, Sphere, Fool Moon, Sound Odyssey…where he played with Chris Liberator, Spacid, Rénald, Arkanoid, G-Force, Black Francis, Bam Bam, Paul Langley, Miss Djaxx, Zodiak Commune Dj’s, Acid Junkies,…..and all the Belgium Acid-Techno-Hardtek Crew.

Parazoid ( Narcosis.be)

Born in Gent, he first saw the daylight in 1984. While growing up, he witnessed his older brother's passion for music, and quickly got interested in electronic music. In search of the right sound, he came across the harsh sound of the TB303, and couldn't let go of it. Inspired by the music of BH808303, Lasse Steen, Martin Damm, Freddie Fresh, Emetic and many more, he started collecting records in 2002.Two years later, 3 Friends who share the same musical interests teamed up. With the name Narcosis they started giving small acid-related parties in Gent.

This year he got selected by Poppunt, and could play an acid-set in the
Kozzmozz YTC Room. In the past few years he got the chance to play at ACEC (Gent), Backstage (Gent), Vooruit (Gent), Hangar1 (Oostende), Nighttown (Rotterdam), ...

In the future he hopes to put his records away, and start bringing different styles of music through live performance.

FOYER : CHILL-OUT ZONE

Moaner (Los Marginales)

As a member of the Los Marginales-crew, you can hardly put a label on Moaner’s musical style. As a result of his early almost obsessive interest in natural and mechanical sounds in general he got in touch with the work of ambientmasters such as Biosphere, Gas, Lustmord or Deathprod at young age. On the 11th k-birthday, Moaner will serve you a blend of intense, lush and spacey soundscapes and ambient drones, helping you to find your way in space. So, see you at the launch…

Kozz ( Kozzmozz )

This first hour resident was part of the organisation of the very first Kozzmozz parties and therefore, played next to all of those big names and received a lot of positive reactions from the masters themselves. DJ Kozz is best known as a very energetic techno-dj. From minimal over hard and funky , but always qualitative and never afraid to challenge the public (and himself). Over the years he has acquired a lot of fans and he knows - as no other - how to drive a dance-floor to exstatic heights.

For this 11th anniversary he shows us his other side and will dig deep in his extensive ambient and chill-out collection.

KEEP SPREADING DA K!!!
