Wazi wazi is a Swahili word meaning bare and refers to women who offer sexual services from the door way of their rooms. Though the word may be derived from Kiziba a Haya chiefdom in present day Tanzania since many wazi wazi women were Haya. In Nairobi, according to White there was much prejudice from the watembezi streetwalkers or permanent malaya prostitutes who regarded the Haya as very aggressive and promiscuous, sleeping with a man of any tribe, though here as in other forms of East African prostitution intercourse was intertribal rather than intratribal where there were taboos. Wazi wazi women demanded payment in advance and beat up men who did not pay or stole their clothes for sale. Their involvement in prostitution had something to do with providing short term cash and as with watembezi women they did not stay long preferring to spend the cash they had accumulated back home in raising their own status. Divorce was frequent amongst the Haya probably because uniquely in East Africa a way for a man to quickly raise cash, notably during a depression in coffee prices, was to obtain a return of bridewealth by divorcing his wife. The lesson for AIDS prevention may well be to promote more stability in world commodity prices and a more equitable share for the grass roots.
