- Your first thought about Germany? - plz read, i'm curious :)

What is your first thought, when you read or think of germany? (as i am)

Is it more negative or positiv?
I'm just curious, as i am pretty often in foreign countries, i get different resonance, coz of my german past.

I spend long time in america and i always had a nice welcome there as a german.
In France they insulted me as nazi and crap like this.
In Holland are my impressions very mixed, young ppl are cool and older go sometimes to a distance to me.
My past is my burden...

I still don't know what country I prefer. Holladn is cool because of the parties. Germany is cool because of the festivals.

I think the people in holland are more open. But the germans know how to party better.

In 2 weeks i will be spending 5 days in essen. Do you maybe know if something is going on in Essen?

Eventhough we're neighbouring countries, culturewise we're miles apart! First thing that pops to mind is the fact that Germans have this stigma of being very authorial (which they are) and have this thing with hierarchies (which they do).

Also unlike the Dutch, the Germans insist on keeping things on a last name basis. It's always 'Herr this' or 'Frau so-and-so'. My work takes me all around the globe and my contacts are predominantly on a first name basis, however the Germans don't seem to operate the way most European cultures do. Yet, it doesn't bother me, because it's just culture, innit! But adapting basic social behaviour may change the overall opinion about a whole nation.

When it comes to partying, the Germans do know their stuff. I guess it depends on what scene you're into. But that's all over the world pretty much the same.

I really love Berlin. It's such a wicked city :bounce: I've had some great times there - Tresor :respect:

I can understand that the older generation can have some/real problems with the Germans, same as football fans. But personally, I have no issues with them.

I have worked 2 years in Germany and the only person I would speak to and not call his first name was the highest chief. I think it also depends on what kind of bussiness you're working in. I started to work for another german company just last week. I had some contact with german college's. The first thing they all said....Hi dominik how are you, nice to finaly talk to you. So they didn't even mention my last name.

OK, i must admit, I work for a travel agency and the people there are most of the time, more losen up.

I went to the Frankfurt christmas market last night in Birmingham, drunk some Glühwein :p had some Stollen, it was ok but nothing like the markets in Germany, next year I think I'll jump on a plane and do the real deal ;)
