Have you learned Dutch yet?

There is some of us western foreigners who have lived in Holland for a while now. Although we want to learn the language and fit in the Dutch soceity, I think its hard because, for one everyone here speaks perfect English or German or some other language. And when we make mistakes in our Dutch they alays switch it to Enlish.....

So my question is how long have you lived here and have you learned Dutch yet???

It's about the opposite of "pijpen"

Btw, I told one of my friends on MSN that you said that "beffen" was the opposite of "pijpen". He said that's incorrect -- beffen seems to be the result of pijpen in his opinion.

I didn't ask him to elaborate, though.

Ya know, r0t8, at first I thought it was really good that you knew how to talk dirty in Dutch. But, after I thought about it a bit, I've realized that the dirty words are usually the ones we learn first.

It's much harder to have an argument in a non-native language.

Beffen can lead to pijpen and pijpen can lead to beffen. But it's a "can", not a "must" (although usually, it's a kind of "expected response")

Sometimes they even happen at the same time!

What would you guys say.. whats the best way to learn Dutch. Besides moving to Holland

Get some Dutch friends through here.

Get books and CDs from your local libarary, and practice.

Find dutch radio stations, and listen to them until you can figure out what they're saying, then practice with them to get your accent right.

Try to think about things in Dutch. Practice with yourself when you're waiting in line at the movies or the grocery store of how those conversations will go in Dutch.

Eventually, you'll start to pick things up.

Having private lessons with a teacher, that's what i do.

I said it a millon times. The best way is to watch the god damm televison.... there you learn perfect ABN Dutch!!!! And well a Dutch Private teacher can help in other things..
