Preventing Fluorosis
Most people are aware that there is a controversy surrounding public fluoridation of drinking water. Here is a list of ways to obtain drinking water without fluoride. In addition, I've listed water purification methods which do not remove fluoride from water.

Ways to Remove Fluoride from Water

* Reverse Osmosis Filtration
This is used to purify several types of bottled water (not all), so some bottled waters are unfluoridated. Reverse osmosis systems are generally unaffordable for personal use.

* Activated Alumina Defluoridation Filter
These filters are used in locales where fluorosis is prevalent. They are relatively expensive (lowest price I saw was $30/filter) and require frequent replacement, but do offer an option for home water filtration.

* Distillation Filtration
There are commercially available distillation filters that can be purchased to remove fluoride from water. On a related note: When looking at bottled water, keep in mind that 'distilled water' does not imply that a product is suitable for drinking water and other undesirable impurities may be present.

These Do NOT Remove Fluoride

* Brita, Pur, and most other filters.
Some websites about fluoride removal state otherwise, but I checked the product descriptions on the companies' websites to confirm that fluoride is left in the water.

* Boiling Water
This will concentrate the fluoride rather than reduce it.

* Freezing Water
Freezing water does not affect the concentration of fluoride.

Steps to Reduce Fluoride Exposure

* Don't take fluoride supplements.

* Read labels on bottled beverages.
Unless they are made using distilled or reverse-osmosis water, they are probably made with fluoridated public water.

* Consider using unfluoridated toothpaste.

* Avoid drinking black or red tea.
They come from two different types of plants, but both leaves naturally contain high amounts of fluorine.

* Be wary of tinned fish and canned food items.
Fluoride may be used as a preservative.

* Avoid black or red rock salt or items containing black or red rock salt.

* Avoid using chewing tobacco.

* Avoid long term use of medication that contains fluorine.
Certain antidepressants and medications for osteoporosis contain fluorine.

Zuiver water, een noodzaak!

In elke bedrijfstak worden bronnen aangeboord, welke kunnen leiden tot een verbetering van de kwaliteit of de afzetmogelijkheid van het product.

In de siervisbranche heeft dit een letterlijke betekenis.

Immers het aanboren van een goede bron voor het aquariumwater is een van de eerste en noodzakelijke stappen om onze dieren te kunnen huisvesten en verzorgen. Het vinden van een geschikte bodemlaag met goed water is nog altijd een kwestie van techniek, maar ook ervaring en vakmanschap. Bij het maken van bronnen wordt de z.g. pulsmethode nog steeds gezien als de beste, omdat hiermee ook vrij dunne waterlagen opgespoord en met succes geëxploiteerd kunnen worden.



Verdere behandeling:

Vaak worden er nog hogere eisen aan het water gesteld dan die, welke overeenkomen met de kwaliteit van het bronwater. Het bronwater bevat in veel gevallen teveel opgeloste stoffen. In dat geval moeten wij deze stoffen zien te verwijderen. De meest logische en eenvoudige, dus meest aantrekkelijke methode om water te zuiveren is filtratie. Met de gebruikelijke filters zoals zandfilters, kaarsenfilters e.d. kunnen verontreinigingen tot circa 0,5 micron verwijderd worden. In het aldus gezuiverde water kunnen nog vele verontreinigingen achtergebleven zijn, zoals bacteriën en virussen en vooral ook opgeloste verontreinigingen in de vorm van zouten e.d.. Indien wij deze verontreinigingen willen uitfilteren is het nodig een onvoorstelbaar fijnmazig filter te gebruiken, dat zelfs de moleculen van de in het water opgeloste stoffen kan tegenhouden en alleen de watermoleculen doorlaat. Dit kan en wordt Hyperfiltratie genoemd. Een andere naam voor hyperfiltratie is Omgekeerde Osmose. Osmose treedt op, als b.v. water en een zoutoplossing door een moleculair filter gescheiden zijn. Zoutoplossingen oefenen een zuigende werking uit op water (vandaar dat b.v. keukenzout hygroscopisch is!), zo dat water via het moleculaire in de zoutoplossing gezogen wordt.

Dankzij ditzelfde proces zijn planten in staat om via hun celwanden water en voedingsstoffen op te nemen, Bij hyperfiltratie doen wij juist het omgekeerde en wordt water via een moleculair filter uit een zoutoplossing geperst.

Totaal zout verwijdering

Totale zoutverwijdering houdt o.a. in dat andere stoffen dan natrium chloride (keukenzout) bij benadering in dezelfde mate verwijderd worden. In dit verband noemen wij calcium, magnesium, ijzer, silica etc. Door spiraal gewonden lagedruk membraanfilters wordt meer dan 96% van de opgeloste stoffen verwijdert.

Spiraalgewonden lage druk membraan filters

Enkele belangrijke wetenswaardigheden over deze filters zijn:

* Omdat de ruimte tussen deze filters groter zijn dan bij holle vezelfilters (Hoogdrukfilters) is de kans op verstopping kleiner.
* De filters zijn leverbaar in een lagedruk uitvoering (waterleiding druk is voldoende), energiebesparend dus!
* Deze filters laten noch bacteriën noch virussen door.
* Ze zijn eveneens vrijwel ongevoelig voor chemische- en biologische aantasting.
* Zij hebben een PH-bereik van 1 tot 8 dan wel van 3 tot 11.
* Deze filters zijn leverbaar in lage capaciteiten! Vanaf circa 45 liter per 24 uur.

De druk waarmee het water door een membraanfilter wordt geperst, hangt vooral af van het zoutgehalte van het voedingswater. Bij een hoog zoutgehalte is de toe te passen druk hoog. Past men hoogdrukfilters toe voor water met een laag zoutgehalte, dan krijgt men een hogere productie per filter.

Na behandeling

Na de filtering van het water door een osmose filter zullen wij het zo gezuiverde water geschikt moeten maken voor onze dieren. Gebruikt nooit puur osmosewater voor uw vissen, want dit water bevat geen mineralen meer. Ook is het water ontdaan van allerlei ziektekiemen en bacteriën die met het kraanwater mee kunnen komen om uw dieren te kunnen infecteren.

Zo kunnen wij osmose water eerst circa 24 uur doorluchten en verder zullen wij dan de noodzakelijke mineralen voor onze dieren weer moeten toevoegen.

Een alternatief

U vindt een osmosefilter te kostbaar, en toch wilt U veilig water voor uw dieren gebruiken!

Als alternatief kunnen wij U dan voorstellen om (b.v. Bar Le Duc of Spa Blauw) mineraal water te gebruiken. Dit water bevat alle mineralen die goed zijn voor de mens maar ook voor onze dieren. Alleen de silicaten die de bruine aanslag op de bodem en stenen kunnen veroorzaken die zitten nagenoeg niet in dit water.

Western Digital DRM'd Hard Drive
Won't Let You Share MP3, DivX or Impulse Tracker

Western Digital's 1TB MyBook external hard drives won't share media files over network connections (UPDATE: Don't install the "required" client software! See workaround below). From the product page:

"Due to unverifiable media license authentication, the most common audio and video file types cannot be shared with different users using WD Anywhere Access."

It doesn't matter what the files are: If you try to share these formats over a network, Western Digital assumes not just that you're a criminal, but that it is its job to police users. You see, MP3, DivX, AVI, WMV and Quicktime files are copy-protected formats.

The list of banned filetypes includes more than thirty extensions. Some of them are bizarre: .IT files are banned — these are Amiga-style music modules composed with Impulse Tracker, a particularly well-loved tracking sequencer that hasn't been updated in almost a decade. I composed with IT myself, back in the day, and still have all my shitty compositions, none of which Western Digital would have me share. (Try MOD vs. Speak&Spell masterpiece Eddie Dreams of Women, if you dare: IT, MP3)

Isn't it cute how the only data it views as worthy of policing are music and movies? These are the only copyrights that matter under corporate monkey law.

It's the most astonishing example of crippled equipment I've ever seen. A DRM'd hard drive! Whatever next? Dreaming meat?

UPDATE: The manual's appendix and online support site provide setup instructions for SAMBA, allowing access over IP instead of with the DRM-infested and poorly-reviewed client app, elsewhere claimed to be "required."
