Biografie
Born and raised in São Paolo, Brazil. Deejay
Irie currently lives in Groningen, The Netherlands. Gifted with a pair of hands that operate best at the speed of sound and a broad interest in styles and genres, Irie (his real name) is one of The Netherlands most forthgoing, top notch turntablists, renowned for his skills.
His style can best be described as 'eclectic', mashing up and mixing hip hop, reggae, funk, soul, rock, breaks and bass. Irie always evolves himself, since 'style' is never a definite concept and needs revision on a daily basis.
Irie developed his turntable skills by competing in turntable battles since 1998. The hunger to get better resulted in him winning the Dutch DMC Championship in 2002 and manages to prolong his title for 5 years! His hunger for face-to-face supremacy battles results in a runner up World Champion title at the DMC World Championships in London in 2005.
Since 2006 he works with urban theater company 'Ish". With them he tours the globe. Irie commits himself to the group as resident (cinematic) deejay. Besides performing Irie is involved in producing musical and visual content for the 'Ish" theatershows.
Multi talented thinking beyond boundaries, Irie successfully adopts video scratching in his mix around 2008. He named it 'Cinematic" deejaying. It enables him to spread a message in sound as well as image and create a fulfilling, 360-degree experience for the audience.
Still eager to battle Irie took his new visual skills to the test and won the first European Video DJ Battle in 2012 (Mixmove, Paris). The year after he competed in Las Vegas, where he got third place. 2015 is the year he won the DMC Online Visual DJ World Championship, making him their first Visual DJ World Champion ever.
Between developing and performing theater shows, Irie kept himself busy by playing alongside and performing with acts like Mixmaster Mike, The Gaslamp Killer, KRS One, Jeru Da Damaja, Black Milk, Q-Bert, DJ Fly and Odyssee.
With 20 years experience under his belt, shows in all six the continents and a variety of artistic interests, Deejay Irie has proven time and time again that he can captivate the crowd with his unique style and character. Whether it's DJ'ing in a club, performing with jazz musicians, doing radio shows or creating theater shows and video content, Irie is guaranteed to bring his A-game, and leave the crowd behind with a big smile.
