Biografie
Braaks's unique style is a result of his many influences through the years.
It all started in 1985. From a young age, Braaks was lucky enough to surrounded by people with a passion for music. From birth, his parents used to take him to the annual Notting Hill Carnival in London and this was where his initial passion was ignited. Initially it was Reggae and Dancehall music, but in the mid 90s a new and exciting sound started emerging which was the beginning of a new era for Braaks... U.K. Garage.
It was an exciting time in london with the emergence of this new sound. Unfortunately, Braaks was too young to visit any of the clubs and be part of the movement and culture. Pirate radio continued to keep the buzz going for him and many TDKs were swapped with his mates at school at this time.
At the age of 15 he got his first set of records decks and he never looked back. It was the year 2000 and the soulful, and deeper garage that he knew and loved started to take back seat for a newer, edgier, moodier and darker sound which slowly morphed into Grime.
As Grime started overshadowing the true Garage sound, Braaks found himself going back to his first love, reggae and dancehall. For the next few years, this was all he played, regularly attending and playing at reggae dances and soundclashes under a different alias.
Another few years went by, until 2004/2005 when there was a resurgence of "new skool" garage. Labels such as Charma's Stereohype and Karl Brown's 2 Tuff 4U, was bringing back that garage vibe. Braaks couldn't help but notice the original sound he loved and got him into DJing was back.
He has since never looked back, staying true to the Garage sound, as well digging deeper into the Deep & Soulful House sounds that compliment each other so well. Following other DJs and crate diggers such as Benji B, Gilles Peterson, and Alexander Nut opened up Braaks's ears to a new sound that broke the boundaries of House music. Artists such as Joy Orbison, Pangaea, Burial and Martyn inspired him to keep his sets diverse and keep his audience captivated.
In 2014 he was chosen by Garage legend Grant Nelson to be part of his roster of DJs on his new radio station D3ep Radio Network, a station which has since grown from strength to strength. You can catch Braaks holding down his weekly show "Rhythmic Addiction" every Friday night at 7pm GMT. His show has gained great following, with guests such as Kito Jempere, Demarkus Lewis, Marc Cotterell, Groove Riddim & Jordan O'Regan passing through.
2014 also saw Braaks complete a years music production course at the Point Blank music school in London. He saw his first release "Amani" released in 2015 as part of a compilation series for the Miami Winter Music Conference. His subsequent track "Palace" was also supported by Dusk & Blackdown on Rinse Fm.
Braaks continues to be in the studio for 2016 with the promise of more releases this summer. Watch this space
