Het drieëntwintigste deel van de befaamde Australische mixcompilatie reeks Balance heeft onlangs het licht gezien. Deze keer is de uit twee cd's bestaande mixcompilatie samengesteld door Matt 'Radio Slave' Edwards. Hij geldt als één van dé producers die niet vies is van flink experimenteren wanneer het om elektronische muziek gaat. Dit is onder andere te horen op "Radio Slave - Works 'Selected Remixes 2006 – 2010" dat in het najaar van 2011 uitgebracht is.
Zoals gezegd is Balance 023 zijn meest recente grote project. Hierover zegt Matt 'Radio Slave' Edwards:
"The idea of a double disc is something that totally suits me down to the ground. I'm interested in so many types of music. So with the balance compilation I knew I'd have to take one mix in a clubbier direction and then the second disc would be all about showcasing tracks from my favourite producers and creating an environment for home listening that isn't just wallpaper."
CD 1 - White Skies
Het eerste schijfje is volgens de eigen woorden van Radio Slave doordrenkt met met emoties van een turbulente periode eerder dit jaar. Hierover zegt hij:
"This year has been a really tough one so far. I had a minor operation in January which went wrong and what was supposed to be a simple procedure turned into a real nightmare. I had to take 6 weeks off work, cancel a tour to the USA and I couldn't do anything but hope for a speedy recovery. I also split with my girlfriend and had a huge fight with a best friend which is so not me. It was a series of events that seemed totally out of control and it really threw me off balance. So, it meant I had to delay working on this project, but I still believe the end product might be even better due to the earlier events of the year. Emotions and experience are so important for me as an artist and I believe I work best when I need to lose myself in my work and immerse myself in music."
Na een korte opening met wat ambient sounds, wordt het gaspedaal ingetrapt en gaat Radio Slave ook direct de diepte in. Door een uitstekende platenkeuze weet hij je mee te slepen in een fraaie luistertrip. Individueel valt het gekozen materiaal niet direct op, maar als geheel weten alle geselecteerde tracks elkaar te versterken. Subtiel weet Radio Slave halverwege de mix ook nog een rustpuntje in te bouwen met tracks van Timeline, Vadim Svoboda en Nina Kraviz. Daarna doet hij er weer een schepje bovenop en is het weer flink swingen geblazen, echter wordt de nodige subtiliteit niet uit het oog verloren. Zo is "Descendants" van Melchior Productions een bijzonder prettige plaat om naar te luisteren. Hetzelfde geldt voor "Tantakatan" van Radio Slave himself, gemixt door Prins Thomas.
CD 2 - Maestros and Memories Part 1 & 2
Het tweede schijfje is toneel voor het niet dansvloer gerichte werk uit de platencollectie van Radio Slave. Op dit schijfje komen genres voorbij als ambient, downtempo en andere experimentele stijlen, allen met een melodieus en atmosferisch karakter. Hierover zegt Radio Slave:
"I had the idea of doing a commercially available mix like this for a long time and I'm so happy that Balance were able to license the tracks. Tracks like Slum Village's "One" is an all time favourite and was such an inspiration to me and I'm not sure if a lot of people know this one. Also being able to use Sakamoto track from Babel was crucial in the way I wanted to express a mix that was ambient but had tension and movement. And as with all mixes, with the limitations in time I wanted to take listener through my record collection.".
Het tweede schijfje kent een subtiele opbouw. Van fraaie ambient klanken wordt je voor je er erg in hebt, meegesleept naar pakkende downtempo beats. Radio Slave heeft de tweede mix zo opgebouwd dat er met elke plaat die ingemixt wordt, de mix net wat energieker wordt. Het geboden materiaal heeft een aantal luisterbeurten voor het kwartje gaat vallen, maar kwalitatief goede tracks zijn op dit schijfje ook zeker te vinden.
Het drieëntwintigste deel van de befaamde Balance serie is er weer één die goed in de smaak zal vallen bij iedere Balance liefhebber. De aanpak van Radio Slave verschilt behoorlijk ten opzichte van de vorige samenstellers, echter weet hij zowel met zijn dansvloer gerichte eerste schijfje als met het downtempo gerichte tweede schijfje een meer dan solide indruk achter te laten. Makkelijk verteerbaar is het gekozen materiaal zeker niet, echter na enkele luisterbeurten komt de verborgen schoonheid van deze release zeker aan de oppervlakte.

Balance Music is natuurlijk het label, Astral Music is enkel een distributeur.
Opzich niks mis mee. Maar als dj heeft Radioslave me ook nog nooit echt weten te overtuigen. Dat is hier ook weer het geval.
Inmiddels ook in het bezit van deze cd, maar wat een domper.
Wat mij betreft een van de mindere versies uit de serie.
Af en toe wel lekkere nummers, maar mix springt van hak op de tak, tempo eruit, tempo erbij en een paar ontzettende rukplaten.
