Muziek verenigt, vlot over landsgrenzen heen!

For years both concert halls have been heading musically in the same direction, with overlapping programmes and identity. So it’s a logical cooperation with the help of EUROPE BY PEOPLE, an organisation which, in light of the Dutch Presidency of the European Union, has put together an impressive cultural programme, spread throughout Amsterdam and Brussels. RICO & STICKS #OPGEZWOLLETOTNU (AB BOX)
Between 2001 and 2007, Opgezwolle released three albums (‘Spuugdingen op de Mic.’, ‘Vloeistof + Brandstof’ and ‘Eigen Wereld’) which took on mythical proportions in the Netherlands. Their steamroller of raw, uncut Top Notch hip-hop grabbed you by the scruff of the neck from the very first bassline. If your teeth weren’t shaken out of your mouth by the awesome old school beats from Delic, then they definitely would have been by the jaw-dropping flow with unrivalled lyrics from MC’s Rico & Sticks, which burst into your ears like a well-aimed barrage of uppercuts.
After Opgezwolle, the trio pulled out all the stops with other quality projects, either in solo or together, such as Fakkelbrigade (with homeboy Typhoon!) and Great Minds. They bumped into each other again in the collective Fakkelteitgroep which was part of the legendary Top Notch label. Rapper Sticks even joined the latter as A&R manager where he was able to attract amongst others Kubus, Jawat!, Fresku and Typhoon.
After years of insistence from the die-hard Opgezwolle fans, Rico & Sticks decided it was the right time to pull old classics like ‘Hoedenplank’, ‘Eigen Wereld’, and ‘Tsjappies & Mammies’ off the shelf. For Lowlands ’15 they cranked it out so loud that the huge crowd were collectively treated to a facelift from the sonic blast. The concert was hailed as one of the best of the festival.
Their show at the Heineken Music Hall on the 18th March is already sold out and tickets for the following club show are flying out the door. So yep, the Dutch public has been waiting for this like crazy. All Dutch-hop and hip-hop fans up and down the country, get together!
TYPHOON (AB BOX)
When Glenn de Randamie, a.k.a. Typhoon, came back into the spotlight in 2014 after an extended sabbatical with a razor- sharp second album on the back of his acclaimed 2007 debut ‘Tussen Licht & Lucht’, mass hysteria broke out over the Dutch border. He handled the direction of ‘Lobi Da Basi’, Surinamese for ‘Love is the boss’, entirely by himself and produced a collection of tightly arranged songs which transcend hip-hop and flirt with all sorts of styles including (sixties) pop, Caribbean dance music, jazz, soul and funk. This, combined with his powerful lyrics, (he remains one of the most outstanding word-artists in the Low Countries) is ensuring that ‘Lobi Da Basi’ is well on the way to becoming a classic.
In 2015 he appeared at just about every major festival in his home country (Pinkpop, Into The Great Wide Open) as well as clubs (Paradiso, Melkweg) and he signed off his year of success – gold record, ‘Best Live Act’- Radio 6 Soul & Jazz Awards, ‘Beste Album ‘14’- 3voor12 – with a sell-out Heineken Music Hall Concert. In Belgium he has been taken in tow by Tourist Lemc (they are both signed to the Top Notch label and Typhoon rapped on Tourist’s single ‘Visa Paspor’), opening for him at OLT Rivierenhof in July ’15 and being invited on as special guest for our own hip-hop troubadour’s Radio 1 session. Additionally he played a dance set in November ’15 to a packed out Antwerp Roma, setting the stage for the conquest of our country.
“Stunning in musical richness, lyrically strong and still just as accessible and enthralling”, is how the Volkskrant described Typhoon … and they hit the nail on the head.
JUNGLE BY NIGHT (AB BOX)
A nine-strong group from Amsterdam who wisely passed over the adolescent music stage and went straight to the good stuff for inspiration: afrobeat, jazz, funk & soul and dub from masters such as Fela Kuti, The Budos band and Mulatu Astatke. Their first two records, the eponymously titled ‘Jungle By Night’ and ‘Hidden’, brought them to international festivals including Sziget, Istanbul Jazz and Lowlands and they appeared as the opening act for amongst others Mayer Hawthorne, The Roots ft. John Legend and their musical hero Mulatu Astatke.
Over the Dutch border these young lads quickly pack out Melkweg and Paradiso (where they stood on stage with Seun Kuti during their Fela Kuti tribute evening) and for the recording of their vinyl single ‘Brass Sabbath’, none other than The Gaslamp Killer was at the controls.
Their third release ‘The Hunt’ (released April ’14) received wide acclaim and at the Groningen showcase festival Eurosonic ’14, music site ‘3voor12’ found the new songs “more aggressive, more focused and bolder”. The atmosphere is darker, the musical spectrum is enhanced with dance and psychedelica and the sound is mature and varied! “Jungle By Night aren’t young chicks any more. The soft feathers have made way for plumage with a colour palette you would associate with an LSD trip. The guys have clearly decided to step out of their comfort zone, and that is a bold step which certainly won’t do them any harm”. The group are busy working on their fourth LP, which will be released in May ’16, and from which the single ‘El Miraglo’ is already a tasty precursor.
KUENTA I TAMBU (AB CLUB)
Who will take over the Wegue-torch now that Buraka Som Sistema has indefinitely pulled the plug? We’ll put our money on the exotic Kuenta I Tambu – which means ‘stories and drums’ in Papiamento – a quintet who blend traditional Tambú music from Curaçao with thumping beats and tons of energy. This unique and explosive mixture has already earned them concerts with Major Lazer and Crystal Fighters. Shaking hips and positive vibes are guaranteed. KiT promises one big subtropical party!
WEVAL (AB CLUB)
The electronic music of Weval, spherical, languid glitch-house with a hint of Moderat, immediately invokes globe-like imagery. This doesn’t surprise us since the duo of Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers crossed each other’s path in the film world, so they understand perfectly how to combine image with sound. Their long awaited debut will be released this year on the renowned German label Kompakt (Panda Bear, The Orb). They remind us of the Belgian Vuurwerk, who just like Weval in the Netherlands is on the verge of a big breakthrough in our country.
JAMESZOO (AB CLUB)
Just like Shlomo, The Gaslamp Killer, Flying Lotus and the closer to home LTGL (AB’s Artist in Residence ’15-’16), young ‘s-Hertogenbosch resident Mitchell van Dinther looks further afield than the regular four-to-the-floor beat which typifies current dance music. He blends experimental jazz and fusion with hip-hop, soul, Brazilian samba and bossa nova, finds inspiration in the compositions of Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal, and adores the prog-rock of Soft Machine and the ground-breaking releases from hip-hop label Stones Throw Records. Delightfully non-conformist and eclectic. Just how we like it!
