A State of Trance 550: Invasion
26 maart 2012

A milestone in your career, a worldwide trance event. Have you ever imagined that this was possible?
Hahaha, no. I remember I started A State of Trance on June 1st 2001 in the ID&T radio studio, back then only on dutch cable radio. A lot of DJ's said I was crazy for doing a two hour radio show every week! Now these same DJ's have their own radio shows. The support from the fans and listeners made me want to celebrate the round numbers. I started with this with episode 100 and episode 250. Now it has become tradition and it grew only because the fans wanted it. I'm so proud to be part of this and it feels right to do something back for the scene by not only promoting my "competition" and new talent, but also the growth of Trance as a genre. You feel people that like trance, also love to hear more uplifting, techy or even more housey tracks. The genre is growing and the sound is developing thanks to the fans.

Which track embodies your 'A State of Trance feeling'?
L.S.G. - Netherworld. It's my favorite trance track of all time.

How do you prepare yourself for an event like this?
I try not to play the same set on every event as I'm the only DJ that plays all six. I usually play more instrumental trance and look closely at the fans and requests. But I also throw in a few track I really like personally and always a classic.

What would you think of a gig (or even a trance festival) in space?
Hahaha if any musical genre belongs in space, it's trance!

Which new talent should we keep on eye on in 2012?
Tom Fall (did an amazing job at ASOT 550 in London)
Omnia
Ørjan Nilsen
The Blizzard
Heatbeat

Markus Schulz
Where were you when you have first heard about the A State of Trance radioshow? It was so long ago I can't even remember exactly where I first came across it. I'm going to say sat at home surfing the web. I think I saw it mentioned on a trance portal, connected it with something I'd overheard in a club and bingo. the rest is history! I do remember that my first guest mix was around the 120 mark too. Doing that was an amazing feeling.

What makes the A State of Trance events so special? On the night of the events, if you love trance, you know you're in the only place that matters. Everyone who goes knows it too and it feeds this incredible community vibe. Everyone is there for near enough exactly the same thing and the positivity that breeds always delivers one of the nights of the year.

How have you prepared yourself for A State of Trance 550? New edits, remixes or tracks? Always, but I'm not letting the cat out of the bag on those until the night itself!

Which track symbolizes 'The A State of Trance Feeling'? On a global level I guess it's probably 'As The Rush Comes'. It's the people's choice, isn't it?! Personally though for me it's Delirium 'Silence'. I could have listened to that track every day in the last 10 years and know it wouldn't have lost its magic.

What can we expect from you as an artist in 2012?
Well I've just released my city compilation for 2012. I chose Los Angeles this year and after the reaction to the launch parties we did over there, I know I made the right decision. It was a truly incredible couple of nights. Even after DJing for 10hrs, I still couldn't get to sleep when I went to bed! Then there'll be the new Markus Schulz artist album later on in the year. I'm working night and day on that now and it's starting to take some great shape!

Which artist should we keep an eye on in 2012? For me KhoMha is doing really incredible things right now and reaching a really wide range of DJs whilst doing it. For his range you definitely need to keep an eye on Mr. Pit too. He's able to go right the way from cool melodic to powerful euphoric then off the high board straight into deeper, crazier rabbit hole tracks. Grube & Hovsepian are doing really killer material too. I think their new one is going to blow a lot of people away!

Jwayden
Where were you when you have first heard about the A State of Trance radio show?
The first time a track I released was played by Armin.

What makes the A State of Trance events so special?
The ASOT radio show has an excellent reputation and of course reaches many listeners worldwide which gives it a very universal feeling connecting people who share the same passion closely together, so the event is special due to the fact it manages to bring everyone together under the same roof.

How have you prepared yourself for A State of Trance 550? New edits, remixes or tracks?
I have a 15 minute slot to perform in. since the event reaches so many listeners I would definitely like to focus on the tracks that are recently released and therefore new to everyone's ears.

Which track symbolizes 'The A State of Trance Feeling'?
Well for me definitely 'We Control The Sunlight' since it was used as the sound track to the ASOT footage last year.

What can we expect from you as an artist in 2012?
To be as flexible and versatile as possible with the artists and genres I work with. I'd like to avoid becoming predictable. The more varied I am with what I do, the more exciting it is for listeners. Although I will always be consistent with the specific 'sound' I express in my music

Which artist should we keep an eye on in 2012?
Mat Zo. There isn't a single track from him I dislike!

Tritonal
Where were you when you have first heard about the A State of Trance radioshow?
I was at home listening to a ripped version online, it was so great to hear trance being broadcasted in such an energetic & professional manner. Armin's show has been not only a staple, but a backbone for the Trance community for well over a decade.

What makes the A State of Trance events so special?
Well this will be Tritonal's first appearance, playing both Den Bosch as well as Ultra Music Festival, but that said; Armin's passion for bringing together the hottest producers and DJ's around the Globe for unprecedented celebrations is really the key to these events having such amazing buzz and energy. The stages and productions are all top notch, and the synergy of styles and skills is legendary.

How have you prepared yourself for A State of Trance 550? New edits, remixes or tracks?
We pretty much stay in the studio, as you can most likely tell for our discography - but we'll definitely be taking a few days to pull out some trickery and new selections for our fans!

Which track symbolizes 'The A State of Trance Feeling'?
Well, considering Armin has played "Slave (Tritonal & Ben Gold Club Dub)" for 3 weeks straight including a TUNE OF THE WEEK nomination, we feel this track is perfect. It's edgy, groovy, catchy and full of life & energy much like A State of Trance. We absolutely adore the way Armin has not only supported us, but also how he carries himself both personally and professionally.

What can we expect from you as an artist in 2012?
Piercing The Quiet (Extended, Club & Remixes)! We've just finished a remix for Super 8 & Tab, and are currently working a Cosmic Gate track as well! Loads of new tunes, we really live in the studio!

Which artist should we keep an eye on in 2012?
Definitely some amazing new artists to watch, one of which is the amazingly talented Fast Distance! He's just done a smashing tune w/ Dimension titled Promises which is getting hammered in every set, look out for these guys!

Cosmic Gate
Where were you when you have first heard about the A State of Trance radioshow?
We really do not remember, because ASOT simply since so many years is a landmark
for Trance music, maybe one of the most important indicators what is going on in the market, and we hope it stays this way.

What makes the A State of Trance events so special?
The event simply is made by people that know what they do, that learned their business from the scratch, that came to the business for the love of the music, and this shows in the details that us as DJs simply realize and most appreciate!

How have you prepared yourself for A State of Trance 550? New edits, remixes or tracks?
We are in the middle of it at the moment, we think it is always important to play a good mix of brand new never heard before, and deliver the tracks the crowd is waiting for. We never plan ahead too far and go with the flow, one thing we know is, we will enjoy each minute of it, having the pleasure to play 3 shows in Kiev, Miami and Den Bosch, perfect!

Which track symbolizes 'The A State of Trance Feeling'?
Puh, tough question, maybe for us it could be Armins "Sound of Goodbye", not without a reason Nic made his drumbeat edit of it few years before!

What can we expect from you as an artist in 2012?
There will be more singles with brand new Remixes coming from our "Wake Your Mind" Album, we just mixed Trance Nation for Ministry of sound, containing a brand new unreleased track of ours called "Crushed" and a Remix we did for Emma Hewitts "colours".
On top of that we will continue our "Wake Your Mind" Album tour bringing us to every continent in 2012, so it will continue to be busy on our road.

Which artist should we keep an eye on in 2012?
There is quiet some up and coming guys on the market, but the hard thing is less to get there, it is more to continue producing good quality stuff when being in the focus and the big touring starts, always costing a lot of time and energy. So we are curious ourselves who of these talented guys will make the step to the next level and continues delivering quality tunes.

Protoculture
Where were you when you have first heard about the A State of Trance radioshow?
I actually only got into ASOT about 2 and half years ago. I'd been producing psy-trance and was in the process of moving to a more progressive sound. Armin played one of the tracks on his show and I heard about it via friends. I've been tuning in ever since.

What makes the A State of Trance events so special?
I did ASOT 500 in Johannesburg last year, and it was an incredible experience. Not only is the production incredible but it truly is a global event in every sense. The massive participation of the audience, not only at the event but on social media like twitter was amazing and really made it special for me to be part of a worldwide event like that.

How have you prepared yourself for A State of Trance 550? New edits, remixes or tracks?
I'm always busy in the studio so, yes, I've got a few new things lined up. I'll probably have to knuckle down and do some extra edits and stuff in the coming month, but there are some new tracks, remixes and collaborations I've been keeping under wraps until 550.

Which track symbolizes 'The A State of Trance Feeling'?
I think Gaia - Status Excessu comes to mind simply because I heard it so much at 500. I was also tuned into ASOT 500 Miami while on tour in Japan and remember Armin dropping "Communication" at the end of his set which was pretty epic.

What can we expect from you as an artist in 2012?
I keep saying I'm gonna take a break from remixing but they keep coming in. Ha haa. Seriously though, I'm itching to start work on a new artist album. I just release "Rebrand presents Protoculture: The story so far" on Armada as a kind of "best of" of all my work over the last 2 years or so, but I think now its time for a bunch of fresh new Protoculture originals.

Which artist should we keep an eye on in 2012?
Steve Haines, a new signing to Rebrand Records, is coming up with some great stuff at the moment. I think Rebrand is in for a good year this year in general.

Claudia Cazacu
Where were you when you have first heard about the A State of Trance radioshow?
I used to live in a house with some of my friends and they were tuning in every week. They introduced me to Armin's trance sound and I've never looked back.

What makes the A State of Trance events so special?
These one off events bring together the die hard trance fans from around the world with everyone so very eXcited to experience the amazing production that goes into these events. There isn't another trance event in the world that brings together the high levels of production, The Very Best djs and the most committed fans like A State of Trance.

How have you prepared yourself for A State of Trance 550? New edits, remixes or tracks?
I was really excited last year that so many of the artists performing had put so much effort into their intro's or special mixes just for ASOT 500. I have some ideas for my set this year but the only way to find out what I will play is to be at the A State of Pink stage on the night.

Which track symbolizes 'The A State of Trance Feeling'?
It's unprofessional of me to say but the honest truth is my own track featuring Audrey Gallagher, Freefalling. This is A State Of Trance for me.

What can we expect from you as an artist in 2012?
I've just released part 6 of my Quatrain series on my own Couture label. Quatrain 7 I'm working on at the moment and will release that a little later in the year. My sound is changing quite a bit with a bigger influence from the progressive, tech house and techno styles. I have a new label launching for my house sounds so make sure you keep an eye out for 'Haute' coming soon.

Which artist should we keep an eye on in 2012?
A new signing to my label Jace Williams, he's written some great tracks and even managed to sore a No. 1 on Trackitdown with his first release 'Relay'. Keep an eye out for Black Russian who will be releasing on my Haute label also.

Giuseppe Ottaviani
Where were you when you have first heard about the A State of Trance radio show?
I think it was something around episode 74 or so in 2002 but it's when I've got my A State of Trance CD in late 2004 that I became addicted to it even if my music style was a bit different at that time.

What makes the A State of Trance events so special?
Simply because ASOT events are easily the biggest trance parties in the world at the moment and it's where you can still listen and dance the real good trance music. First time I played for ASOT was New York for the 450th episode party and it was simply great. Then I've been completely in shock and amazed by the ASOT 500 in Den Bosch so I just can't wait to play there again for the 550th episode.

How have you prepared yourself for A State of Trance 550? New edits, remixes or tracks?
I'm stuck in studio since early January as I'm working hard on many new productions and remixes. Next single release will be a track I made with Betsie Larkin, it's called Toys and I'm finalizing all the mixes right now and it will be right on time for the ASOT 550 audience. Moreover I'm finally working on my new artist album so I'll have some new demos to test and I'm really Exciting to show them to a big crowd like that.

Which track symbolizes 'The A State of Trance Feeling'?
I'm still totally in love with Armin's collaboration with Ferry Corsten – Minack. That track gives me the exactly the feeling I'm looking for and it keeps my mind in "a state of trance".

What can we expect from you as an artist in 2012?
As I said above I'm working on my new album and trying to finish it as soon as possible since it's been a while from my last album "GO" released in september 2009. You know time in the studio is never enough when you're busy touring but I'll do my best. I also have many exciting shows around the world like my upcoming tour for Creamfields in Australia where I'm going to headline the Cream arena for the first time. But for right now I'll see you all in Den Bosch!

Which artist should we keep an eye on in 2012?
I'm in love with Maarten de Jong sounds at the moment, he's doing very good and he made a remix of my track Ready which I'm completely addicted to and still playing it in every show. You can check out his latest release on Vandit Records called Rush, that's a pretty good one.

Ørjan Nilsen

What makes the A State of Trance events so special?
The variety of Trance and Music loving people all showing up for the music.

How have you prepared yourself for A State of Trance 550? New edits, remixes or tracks?
I always do.

For me, Darren Tate - Echoes and Delerium - Truly(Signum Remix)

Jochen Miller
A State of Trance" radioshow?

Wat maakt de A State of Trance events zo special?

Hoe heb je jezelf voorbereid voor "A State of Trance 550"? Nieuwe edits, remixen of zelfs nieuwe platen?

Welke track weerspiegelt voor jou het "A State of Trance" gevoel?

Super8 & Tab
Where were you when you have first heard about the A State of Trance radioshow?
Super8: I was at home and had Paavo from A&B visiting and he played me one of the shows where Armin played their new track. ASOT was pretty new back then.

What makes the A State of Trance events so special?
The Atmosphere is something really different and magical. You are aware that millions of trance fans are following these events on radio and on the internet. Also a huge bunch of people are attending the actual events so it is unbelievable to be part of this all.

How have you prepared yourself for A State of Trance 550? New edits, remixes or tracks?
We have something special in our pocket just for this event. Can't reveal much more than this.

Which track symbolizes 'The A State of Trance Feeling'?
Armin's 'Communication'.

What can we expect from you as an artist in 2012?
We are working on our new material and we try to keep the release schedule busy. So lots of new Super8 & Tab originals forthcoming.

Which artist should we keep an eye on in 2012?
Tom Fall

W&W
A State of Trance" radioshow?

Wat maakt de A State of Trance events zo speciaal?

Hoe heb jullie jezelf voorbereid voor "A State of Trance 550"? Nieuwe edits, remixen of zelfs nieuwe platen?

Welke track weerspiegelt voor jou het "A State of Trance" gevoel?

Hallo zeg :O :kwijl:

Maareh tof interview/artikel!
