Biografie
Umeme Afrorave is an example of refined musicianship translated into innovative music. Umeme Afrorave is founded by Daniele Labbate (synths) and Bas Bouma (drums).
The sound of Umeme was created struck by the power of analogue electronics and the many ways these sounds can be adapted to the framework of traditional African music.
Daniele and Bas have been maturing their sound throughout countless nocturnal jam sessions mixing their inspiration from the French Ed Banger label as well as masters such as Tony Allen, Joe Zawinul, Mad Professor, Konono no 1, King Sunny Ade, William Onyeabor and many more.
For producing their first album, Umeme put together a joyful gathering of experienced musicians with different backgrounds. Guitar and Calimba player Michiel Bel and Jos de Haas, one of Holland's finest percussionists. These sessions resulted in a collection of 8 songs that showcase a certain mastery of the crossover between authentic African musical phrasing and raw uncompromising analogue sounds. It's no wonder that the name Umeme means thunderbolt in Swahili, it resembles the sound and energy of the project. For this debut album Umeme collaborated with Togolese singer Koko Lawson, Minyeshu from Ethiopia and King Ayisoba from Ghana.
Umeme Afrorave has been touring throughout the Netherlands for the past year. The aftershow of Youssou N' Dour was one of the highlights. Umeme also performed shows in France. Most notably opening for fellow Dutch band Jungle By Night and performing at Printemps de Bourges one of France's biggest festivals.
