Here are some fun facts about MIKE HEMP --- " I like when I go to sleep with 2 socks and when I wake up, I only have one. The fun part is looking for that lost one. I also enjoy a quality Ding dong ditch session."
Straight out of the mean streets of Glendale, MIKE was one of the lucky ones to make it out of the hood. While most of his friends either ended up in jail, dead, or at Glendale Community College, MIKE chose to take a different route.
At the age of 15 he was drawn in by music he began to DJ in late 1995. One day he borrowed a friends (Dope-E's) first starter decks when dope got his 12's, and it was on from there.
MIKE made a visit to Beat Non Stop on Melrose and swooped his first few hardcore records. (BTW -- The first 2 hardcore cuts were a Rob Gee record and a Speed Freak record. They didn't go together because of speeds but he didn't know any better at the time!)
Continuing his obsession with music and vinyl he prepares to record his first demo. During that time, Power 106 an LA radio station held a DJ competition on the show Powertools, and MIKE submitted his mix. Luckily, his mix was one of the few that were chosen to be played over the air!
"It was really cool to get props on the radio and especially on Powertools because I had listened to that show since he discovered electronic music.
1997, 1998, and 1999 Were the Powertools and world records DJ battle years.
MIKE also began attending the Hardcore events but had no real connections to acquire gigs. So, he played where he could, Powertools and World Records.
He begins to utilize DJ battles as a way to make something happen! This pretty much helped develop his style into what you see today.
He finally wins one of the World Record battles after placing 2nd,3rd, and 4th for a few years.
In 2000 MIKE and Dope-E produce a demo together. After some distribution of the demo MIKE got his first night gig! (From Pheline) At a monthly event that was called Detour at the Fox Theater.
It was a cool gig but it made MIKE realized that he needed "More records and really needed to dig in the crates to find some stuff worth playing."
Through 2001 MIKE continues to practice and play were can.
2002 consistently handing out mixes to anyone who would he created the Law and Disorder Hardcore party series. Law and Disorder 1 was held in Downtown L.A.
"It was my first great show and it was dope!"
MIKE then purchases a MPC 2000XL and started making some fresh beats.
In 2003 He continues to branch out, handing out demos and making connections. Law and Disorder 2 was organized and also went very well.
2004 and he MIKE is still relentless for his musical passion. Practicing day and night. Next came another event on the series 'Law and Disorder 3' held in Los Angeles.
Late in 04, MIKE, Dope, (along with) Omar Santana produced a battle record and in March of 2005 MIKE released his debut album - 'Weapons of Mass Destruction'
The highlight of 2006 for MIKE HEMP was his graduation from the Recording Engineer program of Musicians Institute in Hollywood.
"I was there full time non stop putting in mad fuckin studio work and learning and absorbing everything about audio that I could. Probably the best move I've made in my life. I thought I knew about audio before I got there but after going five days a week for 5/6/7 hours a day for all those months, its on a whole diff. level now. I also picked up the Virus TI this year!"
Since 2007 MIKE has completed many tracks and has perfected his style.
"More to come.....so stay tuned."
