Biografie
From a young age Martin was already very interested in a wide variety of music genres. At the age of seventeen Martin started his career as a DJ, and quickly got himself bookings in various clubs and events. During the early 90s, when housemusic came along, he got himself more into making music and organising events. In 1996 he began experimenting with ambient, noise, experimental music and sound art. In this period he also made his first experimental films. All these experiments came together in 1999 when he, under the pseudonym Barkode, got his first audiovisual live performances at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Mixfestival of the Guggenheim in NY. He founded Barkode, an agency that was involved in the development of art and culture projects, new media and audiovisual design.
Barkode developed several large and small festivals, events and concepts. Additionally Barkode developed audiovisual concepts for brands like Philips, Marlies Dekkers and Dow Chemicals. In this period he succeeded with his audiovisual performances to capture the art and new media as well as a place in the club scene. He had exhibitions and performances in art and film festivals like Enhouse (Spain), International Film Festival Rotterdam and Aicarte (Portugal), but he also played at festivals like Dance Valley and Pukkelpop and made two DVDs.
Besides his Barkode projects he started in 2005 as a programmer for Off_Corso, a club in Rotterdam. From 2006 to 2009 he was artistic director of the same club. In 2007 he started the stage Club Zonder Concessies, that until 2009 functioned as an incubator area and laboratory for Rotterdam (experimental) musicians and artists.
In early 2010 stopped Martin as director of Barkode to developing audiovisual works as an (solo) artist and continued to focus on programs in which he curated combinations of electronic music, film, live cinema and new (interactive) media. He then worked in the Gergiev Festival Rotterdam with various classical musicians together in a program of composer Joey Roukens and he programmed the University Museum of Utrecht event Master the Universe within the festival No Label on Quantum theory.
In 2011 he returned to noise and sound arts with the project Aldous with a performance around the ideas of the writer Aldous Huxley, while working with Quantum within the audiovisual arts he gave the quantum theory an audiovisual image. 2012 was the year of the Apollo & Dionysus Komplex. Several performances at various festivals and the starting of a book publication that follows in 2014. Perhaps the most autobiographical work.
From 2014 Martin works with Tamara van Suylekom (Trademark Design/KOSNIX): designer, programmer and DJ / musician. Within these new projects they explore the boundaries of electronic music and sound art.
