Biografie
School is Cool are an indie sextet from Belgium, founded in late 2009. Debut album 'Entropology' (2011) introduced Belgium, the Netherlands and France to School is Cool's indiepop in the form of a 16-song chaotic cathedral-like structure of energetic drums, eighties synths, dark, apocalyptic lyrics and grand, baroque choruses, produced by Reinhard Vanbergen. 2012 and '13 saw the band touring Belgium (including Rock Werchter and Pukkelpop), the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Germany and France, and playing at showcase festivals like Eurosonic, The Great Escape and Popkomm. School is Cool's extremely intense, energetic live performance is a trademark, combining complex baroque arrangements with a punk-like desperate rage. On stage and on record, influences of Pixies, the Dodos, Menomena, Kate Bush and Bruce Springsteen go hand in hand with 18th century orchestral music and tribal, ethnic percussion. The juxtaposition of these disparate genres was intensified on their second album 'Nature Fear' (2014). Highlights of the album include singles 'Envelop Me' and 'Wide-Eyed & Wild-Eyed', but it is the darker more electronic vibe of 'Black Dog Panting' that sticks out. This song met with rave reviews, and was extensively covered, sampled and reworked (by Vuurwerk, 2manydjs, Hamster Axis of the One-Click Panther, among others). 2015 saw some new singles, including 'If So', 'AK-47' and 'Black Dog Panting (Reprise)', accompanied by a video triptych by Leonardo Van Dijl.
In 2016 the band released their 3d album, Good News', produced by renowned UK producer Luke Smith (Foals, Crystal Fighters, Lily Allen) which again received ample radio play, and included highlights such as 'Trophy Wall' (mixed by Ben Baptie), 'Run Run Run Run Run' and 'I'm Not Fine' and explored a more classic, dad-rock-side of the band. Guitar solos, saxophone melodies and less intellectual and more mature lyrical content.
In 2020, the band will release its fourth album.
