Biografie
Jelle(phant) Haagsma is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Arnhem, the Netherlands. His oeuvre ranges from neo-psychedelia, noise and downbeat garage with a hint of shoegaze to Arabic and Indian influences.
Jellephant began his musical career in 2008 creating instrumental
and electronic experiments often classified as 'music for film'. These experiments resulted in two albums (2009 and 2011). After his second experimental album Jellephant shifted from these abstract sounds to acoustic songs, often described as "generally uncomfortable due to its pitch black lyrics and overall dark mood". During this time he recorded three EP's and one album: 'Yours Truly' (2012).
After two and a half years of performing solo he was sick of his minimalist sound, way of writing songs and performing. He committed himself to making albums (which he records functioning as a 'one-man-band').
With 'Trampoline Mind' (2014) Jellephant introduced his new sound and working process. He formed the 'semi-psychedelic garage' band 'Jellephant & the Phantoms', with which he performs interpretations of his albums on stage.
On the 20th of June 2015, jellephant released his fifth album 'Loom' on cassette. "An album to trip on", to sway with, to sink into. The plain bright sound of Trampoline Mind smeared to a slow-motion-percepted fog of sounds and rhythms soaked in reverberation and noise, accompanied by some accelerated, dashing songs, insisting you to keep your pace up with its pounding.
On the 14th of October 2015, Jellephant & the Phantoms released a 3-song EP called 'The Semi-Psychedelic Sounds of Jellephant & the Phantoms', recorded in one day the summer before.
On the 29th of april 2016 Jellephant released 'Kick The Swamp!' on LP with yet again a new sound. Just as muggy and dizzy, but faster and definitely more ragged than predecessor 'Loom', 'Kick The swamP!' pulls you through it's 9 soggy songs in no time. It's definitely Jellephant's fastest and meanest release so far.
On the 18th of March 2017 Jellephant released 'Spoon Dreams Nothing'. Again, a whole different deal. 'Spoon Dreams Nothing' is an 11-track album slightly grasping back to the spun-out songs and dreaminess of 'Loom', combining it with the razor-edged fuzzguitars and apparent playfulness of 'Kick the Swamp!' and adding a lot of weird stuff on the way. Perhaps it may remind you of 60's psychedelica and 90's neo-psychedelica with a spoonful of shoegaze, but it is surely adding a whole lot of grooviness and will make you want to sink even deeper in Jellephant's ever-growing pile of sonic mush.
