Kypski
Synthesizer + Turntablism = 'Syntablism'.
It is the art of using a turntable to create and / or manipulate sound with a modular synthesizer.
Kypski's mission is to perfect this technique to the next next-level, hoping to bring the music it holds within to a much wider audience in the near future.
DAS DING
Das Ding has been living and breathing electro since the 1980s. He is a a lifelong synth addict who can now fully communicate through his machines. With them, he can take you to all sorts of exciting and adventurous places, from cosmic futuristic galaxies to darker, more menacing worlds, always with a sense of fun. Because of its rich detail, emotion and narrative, Das Ding’s music works as well on a dance floor as it does at home for closer listening. Born Danny Boston, he is somehow one of Rotterdam’s undiscovered gems despite a body of work that takes in his own cult and long running cassette label Tear Apart Tapes, and releases on the esteemed likes of Minimal Wave, Pinkman and Go Finger. These include his standout Why Is My Life So Boring and Missing Tapes albums that brought new wave, industrial, synth pop and EBM influences to his always elaborate synth patterns and dynamic drum lines. His modular techno output is also nothing less than fresh, freeform and timeless. Preferring the straight sounds of the classic synths he has been buying since 1980, this electro wizard likes the challenge of cooking up interdimensional music with the most simplistic elements. “I’m a fan of the classic 'the whole is more than the sum of its parts' synergy,” he says. “The machines inspire the music, they want to express themselves. No expensive synths for me.” Taking inspiration from the likes of Cabaret Voltaire, Fad Gadget and Kraftwerk, Das Ding makes music for dark clubs late at night, but does so in cinematic ways. He doesn’t DJ, but has two different live sets: one is strictly song-based and another consists of improvised modular jams that are innovative and improvised from start to finish. Each one unfolds like a real story with a start, middle and end, and always sink you into a state of hypnosis; a trance-like mood where the machines permeate your soul and you’re locked in for the ride. The future brings with it new EPs and LPs for the likes of Berlin’s Mechatronica and Power Station, as well as a first album under his Schedelvreter alias since 1986. It is there that Das Ding explores a dark, abstract, experimental side of electronic music. Wherever he takes you, though, it is always a thrilling experience.
MAARTEN VOS + NILS DAVIDSE
Friends Maarten and Nils are experimenting with electronic machines, composing minimalistic trance and ambient music on the fly. Maarten Vos (Kytopia, Utrecht) is a classically schooled cellist, producer and composer who is in love with the modular synthesizer. He combines both worlds often with a organic result of acoustic and electronic sounds. Nils Davidse (Den Haag) synth nut, sounddesigner and keyboardist of Handsome Poets is making great expressive sounds with his modular synth and buchla music easel.
HHNOI + RACHEL PALMER
Cologne based Marco Petracca, aka HHNOI discovered his love for electronic music production at the age of 15. This early love for electronic instruments lead to a musical vita, that couldn't be more diverse. 25 years later, Petracca has tried nearly everything you can musically. From making soundtracks for erotic hotlines, short thriller films and tv adverts to electro punk on big stages and gloomy industrial pop that hit the European charts. HHNOI is his modular synth based alter ego, which originally started as an outlet for quirky musical ideas, but ended up being his main imprint. HHNOI's music is like an evolving soundtrack, with harmonies and melodies you would not expect coming out of machinery that is often being used for rather experimental sounds. Nevertheless, HHNOI is far from being easy. As with his former projects, Petracca likes to break with expectations, by transforming enchantingly melancholic and lush harmonies and melodies into walls of feedback noises. Swinging between unpredictable dark ambience and emotionally gripping electronica, the results are a satisfying combination of well-crafted songform, beautiful sound design and complex beats. For his latest live iterations, HHNOI teams up with visual artist and fellow musician Rachel Palmer to create a unique experience that combines unique soundscapes with evocatively moving live generated, audio reactive visuals.
American visual artist Rachel Palmer has been working as a music producer since the late 90's and as an audiovisual composer since 2013. Her prolific musical background in classical piano, guitar, and electronic music production ranging from soundtracks to ambient, harbors the foundation of her stirring visual art. As a musician, she understands how to implement live visuals not only technically, but emotionally into musical performances throughout genres. Rachel's visual compositions consist of gritty but strangely harmonic designs which transform venues and stages into living, audio-reactive organisms. As former resident visual artist for US based event series and record label SYSTEM, Rachel has performed her work for an array of techno events throughout the United States and Europe. Having relocated to Germany in late 2018, Rachel has disentangled her unique art from such strict genre conventions; she has been inspired by and continues to gravitate towards music that not only compliments, but amplifies her artistic vision. While she is recognized for her visual performances at electronic music events, Rachel also collaborates with artists of various mediums ranging from promotional music videos to animated photography.
CULTUURSCHOK
Born in the 80s, out of a short but intense love affair at castle Hoensbroek, at the very tip of southern Limburg.
His father, who was a gardener at the castle, fell in love with the unmistakable beauty of his mother, who at the time as a maid, literally handed out the sheets.
When he was old enough to be able to walk, he exchanged equanimous Limburg for the turbulent The Hague where Christmas trees were not peacefully adorned in living rooms but lay burning at street corners.
The influence of the romantic castle Hoensbroek can certainly be heard, but so too, The Hague seeps through with its curious history in its music. His music can therefore be called at least somewhat schizophrenic;
On the one hand lively, flagrant melodies that originate in pop music from the 80s and on the other obscure and occult disorder as a result of an era without internet, brutal films and clandestine political and social tightness.
The result is an exuberant and energetic stream of danceable sounds that are fired at the listener from different devices. cultuurschok uses a combination of a tailor-made Eurorack system, supplemented with ready-made electronic instruments. Depending on the state of mind, his set consists to a greater or lesser extent of raw disco, electro, techno or acid.
cultuurshok is an alias of Detlef Villerius, also co-founder of Cosmotronic (Eurorack modules) and founder of the False Flag records label.
KLANKMAN
Under his Klankman moniker, Maarten Epskamp brings his own twisted take on techno with a lavish amount of acid . From an early age he has been fascinated by the immersive power of rhythmic electronic music and the DIY possibilities of producing and performing, This resulted in a sound that's dominated by hypnotizing repeating loops and rough rhythms.
He is the only artist not playing with a modular system during the whole festival, but with his complete hardware setup and his driving music there would not be a better act to finish the festival!
In his production as well as in his live performance, Klankman's freeform method leaves room for unexpected turns. The result might sometimes be experimental and certainly be intriguing, but the dancefloor is never far away.
Recently Klankman released his music on Tar Hallow from Rotterdam and Bunker Den Haag.
BORIS SCORPIO
Under his Boris Scorpio moniker, Hein Verhoeven is creating live, improvised modular synth music for the last 10 years. He prefers playing live over recording because in his vision the inspiring
unpredictability of the modular synth is best shared live with the direct response of an audience. His style ranges from noisy ambient to harsh industrial techno.
