Slagmann and Heleen Blanken present KRYSALIS in Hotel Arena
On Saturday November 17, KRYSALIS sees the day of light in the chapel of Amsterdam’s Hotel Arena, with two multidisciplinary live performances.
Music comes from Slagmann, a new collaboration between techno producer Talismann and music ensemble Slagwerk Den Haag. For this live interpretation of their new album KRYSALIS, they join forces with visual artist Heleen Blanken. The outcome is an adventurous synthesis of hypnotizing rhythm patterns, organic soundscapes and captivating cinematography – or, as the artists themselves like to call it, a “ritualistic experience.

Slagmann is an initiative that arose from a shared curiosity for innovative sounds. Talismann, real name Guy Blanken, has already making waves for ten years as producer Makam, and this is his third album. Slagwerk Den Haag has been renowned as an experimental ensemble since 1977, never steering clear from the cutting edge, with their colorful arsenal of percussion instruments.
Talismann Records & Inviting the Producer
Well over a year, Slagmann worked on this genre-crossing album. Sometimes dreamy and dark, euphoric and explosive at other times, this mesmerizing cross-pollination between ritualistic percussion and drum machines will lure you into the murkiest depths of electronica and classical minimal music. The album has fourteen phases and will be released on Talismann Records in January 2019
KRYSALIS is part of a new series of projects by Slagwerk Den Haag, called ‘Inviting the Producer,’ inviting creators of electronic music to explore the analogue set of instruments as a soundbank.
Scenography Heleen Blanken
For the visual identity of KRYSALIS and the scenography of the live show, Slagmann works together with Heleen Blanken, who has been stunning both the music festival scene and the art world with her awe-inspiring visuals. Fascinated by the perfection of nature, she has created a show where the chrysalis—the pop in which a caterpillar turns into a butterfly—becomes a symbol for transformation.
Blanken not only uses video images for her rhythmical light show, she also makes use of a hanging sculpture and software that was especially designed for KRYSALIS. Together with the three musicians—and their remarkable collection of percussive instruments—the aim is to bring the crowd under a collective hypnosis.
The two concerts will take place in one of the finest venues of Amsterdam, in the chapel of Hotel Arena. They’re part of the light art event Parklicht, which will take place for the second time on several locations in the Oosterpark from November 14 through the 18.
