Scorching new shows by Ben Frost in collaboration with visual artist MFO & Jlin
During Amsterdam Dance Event The Rest is Noise explores the boundaries of dance music in this double bill with two of the most extraordinary artists of our time. Following his blistering performances in 2012, 2013 and 2014, Ben Frost is back with a new AV show based on his latest album, The Centre Cannot Hold, in collaboration with visual artist Marcel Weber (MFO). None other than Jlin signs for the opening set.
A heady electronic concoction of dark noise, subsonic bass and eerie synthesizer tones, Ben Frost’s music engulfs the listener in awe-inspiring waves of sound. The Australian composer’s goal is to convey raw power, and he is duly renowned for the intensity of his live shows. His foremost sources of inspiration include the rock concerts he attended in his youth and the volatile landscapes of Iceland, where he currently lives.

Frost garnered critical acclaim for the albums he released on the Bedroom Community label, which he co-founded with composer Nico Muhly and producer Valgeir Sigurðsson. His first opera, The Wasp Factory (2013), was based on the eponymous novel by Iain Banks. In addition to film scores and television soundtracks, he has produced music for modern dance performances by Wayne McGregor/Random Dance and Akram Khan. And as a producer, he has collaborated with Tim Hecker, Colin Stetson and Brian Eno, among others. His new album, The Centre Cannot Hold, with assistance of legendary sound engineer Steve Albini proves again the impact of his music.
A show of such distinction demands a worthy second act: Jlin became a dance festival hot ticket following the release of her critically acclaimed debut, Dark Energy, which was voted best album of 2015 by The Wire magazine’s contributors. Her recently released second album, Black Origami, offers yet another highly personal and mysterious take on juke and footwork, the rhythmically charged electronic dance music genre from Chicago. Voted 'Best New Album' on Pitchfork and received tons of praise by critics and public. Jlin was mentored by footwork pioneers RP Boo and DJ Rashad, and has collaborated with Holly Herndon, William Basinski and dancer Avril Stormy Unger, among others.
At 19:30 there will be a pre-concert talk in collaboration with audiovisual platform FIBER at Foyerdeck 1: Ben Frost and Marcel Weber (MFO) will speak with music journalist Holly Dicker (staff writer at Resident Advisor) about the new album, The Centre Cannot Hold, and the art of AV-performances. Free Entrance
Before and after the concerts Arif will spin his favourite records.

Intense nieuwe shows van Ben Frost ism visueel artiest MFO & Jlin
