On October 17th Grounded Theory and Raven is Leven team up for a special edition of the Berlin-born party during this year’s ADE. The night at Rhone Warehouse will feature Blueprint label boss James Ruskin, a live set by Rrose as well as performances by Grounded Theory head Henning Baer and camp members Moerbeck and Blue Hour.
One of the leading lights of British techno, James Ruskin has been an active protagonist in the underground music scene for more than 15 years. His musical history goes back even further to mid-80s electro and hip-hop, before he discovered Detroit techno in the early 90s and founded Blueprint in 1996 together with Richard Polson. With releases on Tresor, Jealous God and Coda, the London-based artist has gained a worldwide reputation with his rough-edged sound cited as a major influence by many contemporary producers and DJs.
Enigmatic, Duchamp-referencing producer Rrose first appeared on Sandwell District in 2011, just a few months before the label announced its closure. His debut on the imprint as well as a collaboration with sound artist Bob Ostertag for the Motormouth Variations LP defined the final phase of one of the most important techno outfits of all time. He then launched his own Eaux imprint in 2012, which functions mainly as an outlet for his own productions and collaborations. The hypnotic and staggering sound makes his live sets an unmissable madness.
Henning Baer is one of the masterminds behind the 2009 established Grounded Theory party and booking agency. As promoter, DJ and producer he has a fondness for raw and industrial-leaning sound, which is also evident on his eminent releases for Adam X’s Sonic Groove, Psyk’s Non Series and the K209 label he runs together with Milton Bradley.
Born and raised in Berlin, Moerbeck’s interest in electronic music first developed in the early 90s together with the rise of the German capital as one of the most exciting places for underground techno. Nowadays he runs his own label Code Is Law, which stands for pulsating innovative techno, and is a regular at Berlin’s club Stattbad.
Blue Hour surfaced in late 2013 with a striking debut on his own self-titled imprint and only within a few months established a reputation for a sound that marked a refreshing change for a scene ever more dominated by dark and industrial aesthetics. His classic, floor-focused sound captures the energy and spirit of techno’s early days.
Operating for 5 years, Grounded Theory has become an institution in Berlin’s club landscape. With previous stops at Copenhagen, Milan, Vienna and this year’s ADE special edition, the series continues its mission to carry the concept to new cities.
