It's amazing how many assumptions are made just by withholding information, as Marquis Hawkes has discovered over the past year. Yet in an era of data overload, where knowledge of everything is readily available, right down to what someone had for breakfast, it's refreshing to still have a few quantities which are unknown. Is he from Chicago, Glasgow or Frankfurt? A fresh faced new player to the game, or a seasoned hand with his irons in the fire for over a decade? Is Marquis Hawkes even a He?
What is clear however, is that this is an artist with some firm ideas about aesthetics and execution who came to observe current trends align themselves coincidentally with the kind of sounds he had been interested in listening to for some time.
Four EPs later for Glasgow's infamous "Dixon Avenue Basement Jams" imprint, and Hawkes' sonic manifesto has become clear, each record having sold out in quick succession, undoubtedly helped by major DJ support of big hitters Jackmaster, Eats Everything, Martyn, Boddika, Optimo and Ben UFO to name but a few.
The attention of Creme Organisation luminary DJ TLR was caught early on, leading to a request for a remix of Neville Watson's "Against The Tide", and onward to a full solo EP for Creme to be released in 2014. Likewise Hawkes' came into his own when remixing Studio Swiss' "Falcon's Pass" for a limited edition Crow Castle Cuts vinyl run which went on to be featured as the opening piece to Move D's Boiler Room set recorded at Dimensions Festival.
However, in a move making it very clear that Hawkes' is no one trick pony whilst at the same time wishing to maintain a distinction between his different interests, his "Juxta Position" project was unveiled in late 2013, giving him a platform for his colder, darker and more precise sounding output. This was inaugerated with his first release under this moniker, "Vol. 1, the second release for DVS1s "Mistress Recordings" label.
Despite this backdrop of concentrated studio creation, Hawkes' original motivation remains as a DJ, in which capacity he always seems to tune in to what an audience wants to hear, without falling to the lowest common denominator, whilst managing to throw a few curveballs along the way.
Look out for further new releases to be announced throughout 2014!
