Biografie
The Amsterdam-based singer-songwriter, Chagall, is not just making dubstep or pop. No, she combines these influences and adds a good deal of her own raw soulful sound and lyrics. Chagall's songs are a powerful testimony of what inspires her. Holland was surprised this summer by her song 'Breathe', which was recorded together with the producer duo, Bronstibock. 'James Blake eat your heart out', the Dutch pop magazine OOR wrote in its raving review of the song's catchy, modern dub-pop sound.
DJ Rob Stenders of 3FM radio couldn't get enough of it. He made her perform live in his program several times, and 3FM proclaimed Chagall 'Serious Talent'. This resulted in a lot of daytime airplay on 3FM and a performance in Holland's best-watched talk show De Wereld Draait Door.
Chagall is inspired by Jamie Woons groove based combination of vocals and electronics, by the raw pop sound of Trixie Whitley and the soulful intensity of Donnie Hathaway. But the first song that shot her into the spotlight had an intriguing, almost minimalistic acoustic sound. In 2010,'By Your Side' was the title song for the acclaimed movie 'Tirza', nominated as the Dutch entry for the Oscars.
At the beginning of 2011 she decided to remix a number of her songs together with Bronstibock, adding dubstep beats. Since May 2011 she has been performing with guitarist Léon Palmen, with whom she performed in Paradiso, as part of the Amsterdam Singer-Songwriter competition, 'Mooie Noten'. With the added talent of Leonard Busselaar (keys) and Sander van Truijen (drums) Chagall recently formed a band that can handle both the electronic and the acoustic sounds of Chagall. In this formation they played at the NS Try Out Festival, Amsterdam Dance Event and Songbird Festival. In January 2012 they will perform at Noorderslag Festival in Groningen.
Chagall already attracted some attention overseas. She is working with the American shoe label Steve Madden, which also pushed Lady Gaga and Katy Perry in the early stages of their careers. Recently Chagall went to London to write and record a track with the BBC talents of Saturday Night Gym Club.
On October 27th 2011 Chagall released her self-titled debut EP independently and started touring the country with her band, DJ's or sometimes just a guitar.
Chagall, a slight, classy, blond girl with a surprising love for glitters and glasses, has a gifted voice that has managed to warm up even the icy summer of 2011.
